25+ here. I got into ice fishing when I was first married because I couldn't afford a boat and you don't need one on the ice. Now I do it because I love it ... and your beer never gets warm. ;D

Save yourself the hundreds and hundreds of dollars you're about to spend on gear and just quit!!!   :P

My second full year!

I have noticed that it is an expensive sport.

I wish I started at 21.  This will be year 4.  Started when I was 40.  I can't remember now why I started.  Must be old age.

WOW !!!!!! Do I really have to go back 57 or 58 yrs? Pa,our neighbor Frank, and me and my brother would go out from Sturgeon Pt. {Lake Erie} I was 7 or 8 yrs. old at the time. Pa had this old Plymouth that he chopped the top off and cut off the doors. We'd head out with our windbreaker tree poles sticking out of the trunk, and planks sticking up out of the back seat area in case we had to cross a extra wide ice crack. A charcoal grill was part of the necessities for hot dogs, soup,or whatever else besides fingers that needed to be warmed up. The fishing gear consisted of 2 ice spuds,{the 1st was usually donated to the btm. of the lake by me or my brother, even though there was a wrist sling on the top end},homemade tipups with white braided line and spreaders. We fished strictly for perch but caught the occasional eel pout. And yes, we always managed a few mudpuppys for the day. Now today, after hauling out my Guide, buzzing through with the Jiffy, turning on the Vex,cranking up Mr. Buddy, and lowering my 2#micro ice line down, I have to pause, look up,and say--"thanks Pa for all those wonderful times" and these great memories.          jockofish
She says " you've got to be nuts to go icefishing", my only reply is, " it helps".

First time I went icefishing, I think I was about 7 or so. Started in earnest about the age of 13....when I joined IceShanty, back in 2003? That makes it 6 years of dedicated icefishing. 8) Hopefully have a lot more to go! ;D

Great thread.

7 years going on 8 and not a single regret.  Better to get skunked than be doing stupid stuff just to fit in with the crowd.  Never was a big fan of getting attention ;D  All I can say is god bless icefishing.  Dont know and dont want to know where I'd be without it.  Good luck on the hardwater!
