Title: Best cleats on the market?
Post by: Bartman44 on Oct 04, 2006, 08:58 PM
I want to get Marbury a new pair of cleats for the upcoming season. I see from some other posts that Stabilizers are highly recommended.

Are they still on top?

I'm looking for something reasonably priced but do the job. I don't want to put screws in his boots as he uses them for other purposes.

Thanks
Bart

I found a pair last year at Gander Mountain that were made by HT Enterprises that look identical to the Stabalicers.  They have the same velcro straps and the screws in the bottom.  The nice thing was they were only $19.99 instead of the $50 price tag for Stabalicers.  I picked up a couple pairs for myself and my buddy.  I never seen them in a mag or web and thought they only made the rubber stretchy cleats.  I'll see if I can find a link to them.

What size do you need?  I bought a bucketfull if ice gear on a garage sale this last summer and there were 4-5 pair of I think stabilicers or Hts. Not sure ,  saw they were all sized mediums but they are the rubber soled with screws for cleats and black velcro straps.  dont know what im gonna do with them quite yet, they wont fit me and my wife probly only needs one pair. Ill have to go see what brand they are for sure.

Thanks for the offer. Marbury is in a size 12 (only 14 years old) so he's in line for the "big foot" size.

Well Bart if you really CAN'T put screws in the kid's boots get the Stabilicers for sure.  I thought they worked pretty good and are probably the next best thing.  I finally put in a bunch of 1/2" hexheads into my boots last year and WOW does that ever work good.  I just make sure to take my boots off before I come in the kitchen :D

I can just visualize him coming in with his friends after a snowball fight and ripping into my hardwood floors. Maybe I could get him a "play" pair of boots and save the Sorels for ice fishing.

Thanks for the posts eveyone.
Bart

I just purchased a pair of Stabilicers from CAMPMOR in New Jersey.
One pair XXL with two packages of 50, extra cleats, delivered to my door in Winnipeg $66.85 Can.
They were the best price I found and nobody could touch that price.
I've been looking for a set for a while now, glad I found Campmor! ;D ;D

Arctic Spurs - Thorne Bros. carries them for $17.99.  For the money they are absolutely fantastic and don't fly off my feet like the slip-ons.  I have run these for 5 years with my mickies boots and you never slip in these.

IMO,Go with the Stabilicers. They are well worth the extra money.  I have had a pair for almost 10 years now and they still work great.  My cousin bought a pair of the cheaper knock offs (HTs) last year and wore them twice then the screws started falling out.  By the 4th time he used them 50% of screws had fallen out!

I also have a pair of these. They are easy on easy off, and they grip good. They will tear up the floor though, so don't forget to take them off ;D

Just recieved my Stabilicers on the weekend.
There is stuff for playing then there is stuff for the serious outdoorsman. ;)
Very impressed with the quality of these Stabilicers. ;D
My bones are well worth the investment of $66.85 Can. ;)

Long before Stabilicers hit the market there has been KORKERS which were originally designed for saltwater jetty fishermen.  I have worn these for more than ten years and they are fantastic!  They consist of a thick rubber sole studded with steel cleats similar to golf cleats which DO NOT EVER FALL OUT!!!  Picked up a pair for my buddy at a yard sale for $10 bucks!!!   Brand new thay are about $35, and worth every penny!

2 posts up. I have a pair of KORKERS my wife bought at a garage sale a few years ago. I've never worn them, always the stretch on kind. I'll now have to do a comparison on them both. They really are heavy duty!!!!!

Have worn Korkersfor several decades doing the jetty jockey thing in Jetty Country in NJ. They have saved my life several times while playing bass over 40 lbs in the rocky suds. I do llike the stretchy cleats for ice fishing. However, I will be adding some screws to the heels of my boots, as the stretchies ain't got no coverage back there!

I bought a pair of Yaktrax Pros earlier this season.  Have used them extensively and like them a lot.  They are easy to put on and take off, stay in place, and grip well on the ice.  I bought them because I can wear them into and out of my Clam 5600 without tearing up the floor.  The one condition they didn't handle that well was when there was some fresh fluffly snow (1/2 inch or so) on top of glare ice.  They tended to pack up with the loose snow and not grip the ice too well under the snow.  Still way better than nothing.  O/W, they have been perfect.  Also, durable getting to and from the ice on rocks and gravel, etc.

They fit both my insulated Danner elk boots, and stretch to fit Micky Mouse boots in frigid conditions.

My .02.

Tight lines.

Best cleats I found so far are hex head screws put into lugs of your boots. Just be careful when putting on the brakes. :o Could end up on your face. Lugs in the boots don't have a lot of give like other cleats.  The price is right too!  ;D FH

Yaktrax Pro. They work on lots of snow, no snow and you can walk on gravel , dirt mud it doesnt matter a little bit pricier but worth the $$. Hope I can use them no ice in Iowa....yet

I have had a pair of stabilicers for 8 years now and I have had NO problems with them whatsoever.  I feel they are well worth the $$$.  But watch out!!  There is a cheaper knockoff version out there that really stinks.  My cousin bought a pair last year and the screws were falling out the second day that he wore them!!!!  :o :o

I have been using Artic Spurs for quite a few seasons. I like them because they are really easy and quick to put on and take off plus they are fairly inexpensive. My expensive pair of Stabilicers stay at home since I got the Artic Spurs. The stabilicers wanted to move around on my boot, straps would work loose and can be a pain to put on sometimes.

I sell Yak Traks is the only reason I buy them ( I don't pay full price). I haven't had a problem yet! If you're going to buy them, buy the Pro model because of the fact that they have a strap and the Walker model has broken on me once and I've lost the other one.

Doesn't matter the ice conditions (wet snow on top, glare ice, dry snow on top, etc., etc) these babies work.

beginning of the season last year I bought H.T.'s version of the stabilicer....  they were ok -- bit of a pain with the velcro if you're wearing them while drilling holes, you get water on them the velcro freezes up and doesnt do its job anymore.  add that into a run to a flag and you have a badly bruised bum! slipped right off because the velcro didn't stick.  at the end of the season i have about half the screws in them than when I started.  not too impressed.

Have used Yak Trax pro's for sveral years and have never slipped with them on. Comfortable, no need to remove them in the parking lot, no need to remove if there is snow on the ice. Current pair have 4 years of use on them and still going strong.

I used to wear yak trax on my running shoes in the winter and they held up to that too.

I recently purchased these Kahtoola Micro spikes for $47.99.  They are by far the best ice cleats I have ever owned.  I've been using for 2 weeks now and have NO complaints.  Stainless steel chains and spikes.... rubber is heavy duty and stretches easily.  They go on as easy or easier than the other rubber types.  No worries even in a couple inches of snow...they don't clog up!  I have at least $50 invested in the other cheaper types (see pic).

Best are crampons.  You don't need the actually ice climbing one, just the glacial crossing one.  Lets you walk up the slope and down the slope.  You can side step.  You can pull your sled backpeddling.  You can run away.  You can jump.  Only you can't play soccer with them...those spikes well might poke into something.  ;D

Still not perfect for the ice fisherman, but one of these days, I'll find it.

They could be a lethal weapon!  I love these things....wish I would have purchased them years ago!  I feel very safe walking and drilling with the power auger.  Slipperybob's Krampons look good too (are they made by the same company?)  Anyway they are worth every penny!

My crampons are made by Grivel.  They are little cheaper than a equivalent Kahtoola crampon or a Black Diamond crampon.  The model I have was only $100 back then.  Prices have gone up some.  The only true shame is they don't fit pac boots.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree ... best darn "cleats" I've ever used.  I had a pair of Stabilcers that lasted a few seasons, but the straps fell apart and the studs kept falling out ... so IMO they are no good.

Bought the Yak Trax Pro for $30 and really didn't like them at all, they didn't really hold well on the ice and packed with snow very easily rendering them useless! They also iced up horrible when drfilling holes. Not good at all for ice fishing, so I'm not really sure what they're good for. So I returned them and was back to square one.

I saw the Kahtoola Microspikes and though the price was a little steep at almost $50 ... but worth every penny now that I've used them last year.  I believe they have a lifetime warranty if I'm not mistaken.  Easy on and off, no problem at all with snow, and you can RUN across the ice if you want (flaaaaaaaaaag!!!!).  The Kahtoola Microspikes are the best I've ever used PERIOD!

No problem using them over a variety of boots and somewhat different sizes? I have big mickey mouse boots as well as leather hikers I would like to use them for. I also am skeptical of how well those would stay on my shoes. I had the HT cleats and they sucked, I walk with a twist when I leave the ball of my foot for some reason, and the HT cleats would twist off my shoe. That is why I got the Stabilicers, I was hoping the straps would hold them on my foot real solid. Haven't used them yet, and am still skeptical of these microspikes, so these Stabilicers aren't going back to Kittery.

Actually I wear a size 10 Kamik Goliath 3s that are HUGE ... the size large Kahtoola Microspikes fit perfect, no problem.  They have NEVER fallen off, even with my older boots that are much smaller ... can't say that about the HTs (staps are a pain and come undone, then broke) or the Yak Trax (they came off several times the first day I used them).  I will say that you should get at least one good season out of the Stabilicers before you start noticing wear/problems/stud-loss. Just wish I had saved my $30 and just bought the Microspikes, but hey ... "you live and you learn".

Kahtoola microspikes are the top for Ice /snow/ name it.  I have used mine for over two seasons and work flawlessly.  Serious traction everywhere.  These make the other traction footware devices look just like gadgets that served a purpose before we had ease of use, comfort durability and positive traction on packed ice/ snow, hills, flat walking, towing your gear on foot.  Spend $ on these.  Save your money for the rest.

Stainless steel chains and spikes - no rust , very strong made ( i should be their poster ice fisherman  LOL)

i had been using a pair of ht cheapos and they have worked fine for two seasons. My only complaint with them was that the teeth were only under the front part of my feet, so if i leaned back, i slipped. Also, they were a little tight around my mickey mouse boots. Just picked up a pair of yaktrax pro's and am trying them out for the first time today....Well see how they do.

Orkdered a pair of Kahtoola's the other day.  Should be here by 1-25.  Read a lot of good reviews here.  Sound like they are the top of the line in cleats.  I like easy on and all stainless steel.  Will update what I think when they get here.  Think it will be positive.   Fin

gonna have to pick up a pair of the micro spikes next season. My new YakTrax pro's slipped off of the front of my mickey mouse boots all day. Frustrating. I am going to give them to my brother and continue to use my ht cheapo's until next season.
