Refinishing your sled?
« on: Dec 06, 2021, 11:41 AM »
My one man flip up is now 7yrs old. And looking at it on the bottom it has its share of scratches and scuffing and gouging. Thinking about trying to refinish the bottom and make it smooth again. Should help it pull a little easier in snow. Did a real small area for a test with sandpaper. From 150grit to 320 grit. Made it smooth but with plastic it takes away the shine and when i re applied armorall it does not shine up like it did. Anyone ever re do your sled and what did you do to it and how did it work out?

Never done over a plastic sled but going over the plastics on a 4 wheeler with a heat gun can really renew the plastics shine. It's a fine line between getting them back to smooth and shiny and making them brittle but it works...  Google search will bring a bunch of videos on how to...

For me, I'd be only interested in improving the ability to pull in snow.  I don't care what the bottom of my sled looks like as long as it's intact.

SPRAY IT WITH PURE SILICONE.   Fill in gouges with P-tex. Find it at XC ski shops. End of subject.

...or this. I use it on my auger flites. Slick as **** and keeps it from icing up. It does have a matte, dark gray finish. I'm tempted to try it on my Smitty Sled skis once the wax wears off.

Ayup.....Ice gives it a try....   :woot:

Only problem with that is the stuff WILL stain, because it's full of graphite. And you can't wash it out or off, either.

With skis, we use a P-tex candle to fill the big gouges, then smooth with a Surform rasp, and finally a wood scraper.

We also flatten the bases with a file, so a nice sharp file would also cut off any burrs sticking up.

Finally, we hot wax them, melting wax on there with an iron and then scraping it off with a plastic scraper. After that, they look smooth and shiny, and are as slick as you can make them on snow.

Since the bottom is not flat, you might try a heat gun, to melt the surface smooth, and then melt wax onto the surface to make it shiny again.

I would not even consider sanding the bottom of my sled. You are just removing material and making it thinner. Why not just get runners?
