Reflectix on hole covers?
« on: Jan 27, 2014, 06:05 PM »
Anyone try gluing reflectix on the bottom of their hole covers? The stuff is really thermal. Wondering if it keeps holes clearer than just a regular hole cover.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Funny, I was just thinking about this when I saw your post. Hope we get some info from others' experience.

I was only thinking Reflectix because I have a scrap. Was going to staple it to plywood for weight in the wind.

No reflectix, but I have used truck inner tubes, they are heavy so they don't blow away, and black so they soak up sun's heat.

You can have the best defensive line in the world but without an offensive there's no way to win

I have no idea how that correlates to the topic...

I will slap some reflectix on one of my covers this weekend and see how it does.

You can insulate to kingdom come but it'll only slow down the freezing I doubt any insulating or covering beyond a peice of cardboard of a tougher material will be a waste of energy the holes will freeze up eventually if you don't add some kinda heat element ie a small bow with a candle of more elaborate

The more thermal the cover the better ice prevention. The air temp is what causes the holes to refreeze. If you have a strong enough thermal barrier between the water in your hole and the ambient air temp, they will refreeze much slower.

The reflectix will reflect the the heat given off by the water (which is obviously a few degrees above freezing) back at the water. Helping keep the air trapped between your cover and the water warmer than the outside air.

In theory

I'm saying the advantage would be negligible

I just use a old piece of carpet, And I have no issues with freeze up. Seems as long as you keep the outside air from blowing in it don't seem to freeze very easy.
