This is driving me nuts. They're racing in on the drop. I look at my rod tip, expecting a bite, look at the screen...they're gone

I see this a lot, (unless your playing a VIDEO GAME) I assume your sitting on a block of ice presently..... What I believe when this happens to me is that the fish are feeding on something in particular, when they see your bait it just doesn't line up with what they are use to seeing. The offering is wrong, presentation is wrong, drop is the wrong speed or etc. Like a mentor of great lakes fishing told me many moons ago, ~at times~  "Everything matters" Smell, look etc. how your bait moves the water around it possibly, also an ole timer stream fly fisherman told me once, If the drag of your fly on a float line doesn't drift just the right speed you won't even get a "look".
Hard for some to believe as "this is only ice fishing" but it all makes perfect sense to me, I see what you are explaining all the time, they look, even race in at times, but something wasn't right so they leave.
Just my opinion of course, and harder to believe when you have them days when "nothing matters"
As far as perch are concerned as that is what I chase most, I am usually trying to "trick" a fish that is 6 to 12 years old, chances are the fish has saw almost everything imaginable through the years so you either have to trick him when his guard is down or "match the hatch" so to say
I had fish react differently and bite in a different way just from fishing 25 fow east of 121 vs. fish I took in 32 fow west of 125. I can never stop thinking about it, were they eating something different or was it the time of day? Possibly the continual pressure change of the day? Only thing for sure is (when talking perch) these fish are always peaking my interest

I'm curious, I never seem to read anything about pike being caught through the ice on oneida. Do guys not target them? Do they just take a backseat to the perch and eyes?

Well there aren't that many, the pickeral have cornered the esox category on Oneida.  Tons of them.
If you were to target pike with big bait, I think you'd get frustrated you spent so much on bait to ice picks.

Seneca was good to me today.  limited on 8-12 inch perch in 2 hrs.  Threw back many more both bigger and smaller.  Didn't keep any over 12.
Hitting Oneida tomorrow.

Nice when I can clean 'em outside.  I can do them much faster and easier on my back because I use a waist high table.  The fact that I can make a mess helps too.

Great post and catch Tom!

KF's post made me think of a filet tip instead of fishing tip...when renovating a kitchen, keep the sink cut-out as it makes an awesome filet board. Toss it on top of a trash container and you have a great set up.

Little perch today puked up some walleye candy! (aka Logperch)

Was a surprise for me in mid winter and in an area where everything I've cleaned has been full of nothing but bugs.

Spent a great morning with "My Man" (8 yr old son) off the north shore today. He caught his first eye at 6:25 AM,..18". We limited by 8:30. He wanted to stay and catch some perch, but we couldn't keep the eyes off the lines...definitely had worse problems. Caught a really nice 25" female. Struggled to fit my hand around her and work her through an 8" hole. Took some photos and sent her packing. Sent a few more nice sized keepers back and left the ice at 10:30 AM. I'm struggling to add the photos here...I have them uploaded to Photo Bucket, but the insert image button isn't working...any suggestions?

Surprised me a walleye had not inhaled that sandpike long before the perch got near it..

Nice.  Sounds like a great day for you and the "Man".

Not sure about giving tech advice, but when you have your picture on Photobucket just click on the 2nd link (there's like four link options on the right)  and it will say copied then put your cursor in the middle of the insert icons and right click and paste it in.   I probably confused you more than I helped, but if that doesn't work someone on here will probably give you better directions.  Good luck

Skipped jigging eyes this morning and went on the perch hunt. Did a 12+ mile loop from Cleveland to 113. Fished water from 15'-50'. Found 2 areas where there were lots of them but they were such light biters. Ones I caught were puking bugs like crazy. Was using the smallest, lightest jigs I had. The fall was painfully slow but thats all they would hit. Some would rocket up 10' or more on the fall only to get a look and take off. I'd say 1 in 10 would hit and half of those I dumped. Cracks were pretty wet on my way in at 3pm so be careful and spud before you cross.

Close, I can see the pics through the link, but they should post direct to this page.  Are you using the link that says "Direct"?

That big one is a beauty!

To post a pic. Go to Photobucket. Under the pic you want are 4 options. Left click on the bottom one that says img
Then right click on it. Left click on copy. Go to your reply on iceshanty and right click and where it says paste left click. That's all there is to it.

Did you happen to have 3 guys move pretty close right behind you with a sled and wheelers + a gas auger this morning?
