Better bite too, I hope!

I got a half dozen 9-11" perch and some dink walleyes. Worst day so far! (It seems I keep saying that every time I come back lately.)

Unfortunately I wouldn't bet on the bite.  Rising barometer that's supposed to level out &,hold steady through most of the day doesn't bode well for the bite  :-\

Very tough conditions out there today. Slush, ice and water up to the running boards on sled, and then try to find a dry spot to stop and fish. I don't see the conditions being any better tomorrow. 20+ inches of ice and after the mess refreezes probably gonna be 30 inches of ice.  Artic Armour pants were soaked but never got wet all the way through to jeans!

I hate to ruin everyone's wonderful discussions of sharpening lawnmower blades, cooking and anything but ice fishing but can we get back on point? What are the current conditions? Anyone out on the ice right now? Walking possible? Do we need to start a new thread that actually discusses ice fishing on Oneida Lake?

well went off the north shore ended up with 24 perch and lost 14 , again today they were very sluggish , but it is refreshing to really work hard for them , they are so stuffed with bait not much room left for much of anything else and the wind was brutal , wheelers did as good as sleds maybe better on the way in it was about 6-8" of water slush , after the next freeze there will be about 24" of ice give or take

How's the ice?
Can I get my wheeler out?
Or should I take the sled?

I'm thinking wheeler for Sun. but either way no speed records will be set , if I go Sun I'm pron to my sled , more water than slush bcons

Went to Chaumont again this morning thinking conditions might be a little better and they were...slightly.  There was only about 4" of slush under the ice crust.  The ice crust was not thick enough to hold a person walking and wheelers were having a tough time.  The sled bogged down a little but did ok overall.  Was much better coming in once the crust softened up.  The wind was brutal!

I got 3 really nice eyes, lost one after a very brief battle and broke another off on the hookset - at least I'm assuming they were walleye.  Lost my new lure and broke my new rod on that one (actually BB4's rod  :)).  I don't think I used either more than 20 minutes.

Brought the scale today and they went 9.4lbs, 7.7 lbs and 7.5 lbs.

9.4lbs

7.5 lbs

7.7 lbs

another shot of the 7.7

Long day for 5 bites, but worth.  Didn't stick around for the late afternoon bite.  After 6 hours of rattling in the wind I couldn't take it anymore.

Thanks Stickbow and hardwater, Bart and HT

Good going Kingfisher!  I had some buds that went today and the group managed 3 eyes,  (2) at 27 inches and (1) at 24. It is a long day for just a few bites but I think it's worth it.

Well here is a current report off Apps. Lots and lots of water some spots its 6" and others its almost 12" deep. Not much for slush left on lake seemed with the wind today it started stiffen up some but still can't hold weight. I blazed a smooth trail out over 2 miles with wheeler which was flat and clear for walker only because my 2 man shanty was flooded and was pulling like a boat anchor so it pushed most of slush to sides. We did however catch our fair share til about 11 and then the wind started and shut them down. Sorry to the guys with sleds if people like me only have a wheeler but when I go fishing I use the tools I have available and try to stay to one trail in and out so not to make ruts. Ice was all of 16" where we were and if the slush freezes there will easily be 22-24" of ice next weekend. So for the long post but just thought I would give the info first hand.

I agree, it's defintely worth it.  It's pretty cool to look down the hole as they're coming up.  They look huge!

I honestly think I'm not in the best of spots.  I went back to the same spot because it was pretty good last time in a period of 3 hours, but for the whole day I think I can do better.  Looking at the contours where I was today is not where I would go if I was basing my decision strictly on the lay of the land.  I would really like to hit a place much farther out in the lake, but I haven't seen anyone there and I really don't want to go first.  With the wind today, I was not moving.

Oh, and here's my homemade creepers.

I put some silicone on the knots so they don't come untied.  So far they have worked great.
