Check out this amazing Walleye caught by a friend of a friend yesterday in the Bass Islands of Lake Erie...They have a good digital scale that put her at 17 lbs, but they were in the process of getting a certified weight to see if in fact this fish is a new Ohio state record.....Couldn't imagine catching a fish like that, let alone through an ice hole!

Wow, that thing is huge.  With these high megapixel cameras, when the guy holding the fish reaches forward with it, it always looks like photoshop to me, I hope it is real!

How long is it?

Hey guys, just curious and a bit nervous about these gas holes that I have been reading about on the lake.  Are these completely random, or do they usually happen at the same spots year after year?  Thanks!

I just called Apps and spoke to the lady who must run it. If I didn't know any better she must not want any business. Very unpleasant and short,I was surprised how she acted. I then called Bartels bait and tackle and the gentleman was great to talk to. I know where I'm gonna spend my money.(Bartels)

Just an educated guess...but I think the picture is legit. I always use a reference against the fish. I figure his mitten has to be about 5 inches across. That makes the walleye something like 37 inches?? Using a formula for walleye weight to length (Length x Length x Length divided by 2700) puts it well over 17 pounds. I'm probably way off...but just fooling around.
Always remember .... they have a brain the size of a pea! How hard can it be? ???

Oh it's real alright! Don't know the length yet. But at 17 lbs. it's pretty long!

I have traditionally noticed them in some of the same locations year after year.

I can say firsthand how dangerous they are. I stopped my four wheeler on one last year and broke through and into 20 fow. There was no indication (ex: darker or wet ice) where I went through. When out there to recover the quad, I drilled a "test hole" a few feet from where I went through and the ice was about eight to ten inches thick. I went through off the SE tip of Dunhams Island.

I have been out on the ice quite a few times this year, but yesterday was actually the first time I went back out on a machine.

If you don't have a floating suit, you might want to consider a life jacket under your jacket, especially when the ice is sketchy. I did not have either one last year. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me.

Wow that's definitely scary!  I don't know what I would even do...Thanks for the reply!  I am coming up this weekend and plan to fish off of Constantia, are gas holes common there?

Traditionally they don't really become an issue until later in the season, takes that long for the gasses to grind away at the bottom of the ice creating thin areas that eventually become completely open. However, I have heard about a couple showing themselves already this year, due to the extended melt down and run-off we had last week....I believe someone posted about one here a couple days ago.

There is a large open one of the north east end of dunhams. I drilled into one a couple years ago. Drilled my dads holes 12" of ice I moved over 10' started to drill and two cranks right threw.  Could not get out of there fast enough. It was constantia but late in the year.

It should minimize them at least. They are in the same spots every year but they don't always poke through the ice. I have had a couple of close calls over the years.

One way to lower the chances of hitting one is to stay on another track until you get close to where you want be. That is not always possible. Also, you can try to stay in your own tracks when you head back in.

I am going to start a seperate thread for Oneida Lake gashole GPS coordinates. I have a couple marked on my GPS but I know SNAGGER and some others have a bunch that I don't have.
