Shanty Storage
« on: Feb 09, 2016, 08:11 PM »
When the season is over (hopefully not anytime soon) I plan to store my Clam Nanook in the garage. Is there a cheaper option for a cover than the $50 one from Clam? There was an old thread that suggested looking at Christmas tree bags or Army duffle bags, but those won't fit my 81"X63"X63" shanty. I haven't been able to find large garbage bags or anything like that on Amazon.

Also, what's the cheapest option for hoisting my shanty to the garage ceiling? I found some old threads where people said they used bike lifts. Has anyone used something like this: http://www.amazon.com/RAD-Cycle-Products-Bike-Hoist/dp/B000PEURIQ. Did you have to modify your shanty to get the claws to fit?

Any advice is appreciated!

Harbor Freight sells  tarps really cheaply. Wrap it in a tarp. Don't forget the moth balls to keep the mice away.

Bags that are used to cover wood pellets are great . If there is an agway or hardware store that sells pellets , they usually have those cover bags around for free .
X-2 on moth balls or dryer sheets .
Hoisting is as simple as rope and using tent poles ( with rope through poles) and a few cheap pulleys or wheels and eye bolts

I threw a bag of moth balls in mine ,worked great except the smell ....inside my shanty now ,I left my tip up bag in the hub as well and it smells so bad it's still hanging in the shed airing out ......moral of the story .....more isn't always better   don't throw a whole box of moth balls in your shanty

First thing is to clean out your shanty.  They have the mint bags that work real well to keep the mice out.  Smells a lot better than the balls.

Great suggestions everyone, thanks! I'll make sure to throw some dryer sheets in there, I definitely have some critters roaming around in my garage.

I went my first five years without a shanty so having one is new to me. I paid my dues and now I really appreciate the luxury of being out of the wind!

I use dryer sheets and they seem to work well.  I place them in the tub and in the creases of the fabric and between the poles.  Just make sure you replace the fabric sheets a few times during the off season.  When I took my shanty out this year the fabric sheets had no smell left to them.  I probably got lucky.

RAT, do you put the mint oil on pieces of cloth or just apply it right on the shanty? Does the smell last all off-season?

Every year we wrap our clam and eskimo with stretch plastic wrap (ULine). We use the larger/longer roll, works great. We have yet to have any critter intrusions. We have also had  great luck with moth balls. Just open up your shanty before use and let it air out a few days before ice season. Never tried mint scent or mint oil, might give it a try this time, to avoid the moth ball smell next season.

Use some cedar wood pieces sold by most variety stores as an option for moth balls. THE CEDAR WOOD PIECES DETERRENT RODENTS, AND ALSO LEAVES A PLEASANT SMELL TO YOUR SHANTY

For storage you could make a cantilever shelf up high in your garage made with some 2 x 4's and plywood. Then it will be up and out of the way. I am going to build a large shelf 4' x 8' to put my Yukon this spring with other stuff.

I am going to try dryer sheets this year vs moth balls.
