Been here off and on for the last year and am from mad county

Been on IS for 2 of last 3 yrs (no 'puter last yr). Wife is highly suspect of the shanty with all the time I spend here. She's a native Montanan and I've been in Great Falls since moving from Minnesota in 2000. Love the Hardwater but live to flyfish.

Been lurking around here for quite awhile, but the posting account is new. Lifelong Missoulian and do a bit of everything -- love to deadbait for pike just as much as I like to fish a size 22 trico on the Bitterroot.

Been in Great Falls 8 months, slowly acquiring ice fishing equipment that I had access too in Minnesota. Before this year I only used a hand auger once before in my life, and that one had very very dull blades. It's not nearly as hard with new blades. Now all i need is an atv, larger fish house, vexilar, spear, spearing house, thermal tip ups, satellite tv, etc.

Joined I/S about a year ago. Great Sight. Great members. I've fished with a few live and would do it again anytime. It's time that everyone get at least one new member. OK? Also do your best to get to the next get togather whenever that is. Maybe one here in Great Falls.

Lifelong Montana boy here. Grew up in Hamilton. Schooled in Bozeman. More school in Wisconsin for a few years and now living in SE Idaho (1.5 hrs from the MT border).
I mostly fish close to home here in Idaho now, but do fish MT once in a while still.
I'll be back in MT sometime, but right now I'm happy where I'm at ;D Probably will end up in Conrad, Shelby, Choteau or Ft. Benton eventually (3-5 years from now).
Been on IS for about 4 years, but 2 of those were while I was on the hardwater in Wisconsin.

Just discovered the site yesterday. Overheard someone in Sheels talking about it. Been in Columbus, Mt. for 3 winters now and really looking forward to hear about some new place's to go besides the little pond on the mountain for trout. I'm from Wis. and ice fished for 30 years.

count me in here from the central Montana (Havre) area. Done a little ice fishing about ten years ago (high school) but never really caught on mostly because we never caught anything as we were screwing around. Just started spearing last winter and have gone nuts. In the process of building an 8 by 8 ice shanty with spear hole. Can't wait until the hard stuff gets here.

Im checking in and am ready to roll. Both augers cleaned, poles respooled, shack cleaned, new poles added, jigs organized, Marcum lx-5 charged, and still in the process of getting some new cold weather gear. I imagine that Eastern MT will freeze about the fastest once it gets cold enough plus with the wind......oh wait, there's never wind out there what am I talkn bout ;) :)

First time here, buddy in Columbus turned me on to this site. Great site from what I can see. I live in Helena, ice fish mostly Holter, Hauser, Pishkin. I get up to Peck every few years, hoping to get up there this year as well.

"Here I sit broken hearted, waiting for ice so we can get started", ice fishing that is. I don't post here very often, but I really enjoy the site. Thought I'd stop by this morning and see whats going on. It's a long haul from the Bitterroot, but we always end up going to Georgetown Lake. Summer and winter, it doesn't matter, because the fishing is always great. This year we killed the big Rainbows with fly rods from mid-July until the end of September and now we're waiting for ice, so we can do it all over again. Good luck to everyone this year where ever you fish and be safe.

New to the site. I was surfing the net a few days back looking for any site that might indicate ice conditions in my area and found this site. Reviewed posts for a few days and registered last night.
Am from Waterloo and have been ice fishing the area since 1993. Although my first passion is with the flyrod, ice fishing keeps me outside during the winter months.
Fish primarily Harrison Resavoir, Ruby Resavoir, and Clark Canyon. I had planned on heading to Harrison this morning to check ice conditions and to drill a few holes if safe to do, but the winds cranked up last night and are still going strong this morning. It is one thing to fish in these low temps, but as you know, quite something else to do it with the high winds as well. Will hopefully get out in the next few days if the weather (winds) moderate at all.

I'm here but I'm not...I'm in Massachusetts for the winter I will check the montana board to see how you guys are doing! This state is small as a montana county but 1000 times bigger than Montana simulteaeously. Lots to ice fish...I think Cape Cod alone has 365 lakes and ponds so I am busy here trapping smelt, shinners, and suckers for bait. I will be here checking out the Montana site..with any skill at all I hope to post a giant chain pickerel, broodstock atlantic salmon tiger muskie or trophy smallmouth for your enjoyment..first I have to lose the balmy weather!!!

I found this site a few weeks ago. I was born in Great Falls 42 years ago. I grew up fishing Swan Lake before the pike (and now lake trout) were illegally introduced. Now I live in Bozeman and am missing the old days of ice fishing so I'm giving it a whirl again. I'd really like to catch some walleye and ling but have no clue. If anyone wants to go I often can get away during the week.

Howdy all. Back up in Sanders County after about 6 years in AZ. I can't afford to snowbird, so I might as well go icefishing.
Not planning on sitting on a bucket in the wind anymore though, found a used shelter to hide in.

3rd year in MT, 2nd season on the shanty. Hoping to explore some new spot this winter... At -10 here in Bozeman it shouldn't be long til the big waters are ready.

Went out yesterday and hooked 6 trout and broke off 5. The one I did manage to pull through was only about 3lbs but they were biting pretty well the whole time. Was in about 5FOW using blue walleye jig and white swedish with worms.

It's Xmas Eve Eve and we in the Helena area are looking forward to another great year. Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter are looking good and we even have a trip planned to the Big Lake (Fort Peck) in January. Bring it on!

New to the site, just signed up this morning before I headed out to Tiber to set up. No luck for me today but my friend caught 2 small northerns, 2 fair walleye, 3 perch, one of them quite large and a rainbow. The rainbow was his sixth in 2 weeks which is 3 times more than we usually see all ice fishing season in that area of water. Will be back out to check the set in the morning and see if Santa left me any wall hangers!

New to the forum. I need help. I am not catching any fish. I never had so much trouble catching fish through the ice. Ice fishing is different out here in Montana. I am used to fishing with live baith like minnows.

Glad I found this site. Great place for info, and when you can get info on the ponds in Bzn, you know its thorough. GF native, Bzm living. Ice fishing is what I do when its too cold to ski, or the snow sucks. Fish CF and Seeley mainly.

The wife and I are from Bigfork, but live in CLinton now. When I'm not huntin somethin, I'm fishin, fly or ice. Our goal is to move back to the Flathead, lots of killer water and we have awesome friends up there!!!
I fish Browns, Beavertail Pond and Georgetown on a regular basis. If you want to go ice fishin, let me know, I'm down 93% of the time!!!

I've been lurking for about a year now and decided to join up. I'm from Great Falls and love to fish for perch and walleyes so that's how I chose my name. My biggest perch so far has been 14.5'' and 2 pounds (which I'll probably never beat) and a 29'' long 12.5 pound walleye. I used to do quite a bit of perching through the ice but have never caught a walleye through the ice. Hopefully this will be the winter for that.

Interested in checking out the Ling scene. Fished Davis ponds on Saturday and my son outfished me for the first time ever. Another newbie here. I just registered yesterday, 1/27/11. I lived in Billings for 15 years and have lived in Kalispell for 13 years now. I'm an ice fishing junkie, just getting back at it after the addition of a bionic knee. anyone interested if you salmon fish try LMR and Ashley in May and June jigging from your boat
Trolling takes too much time and you can fill your limit quickly. JIGGING. i USE BARBLESS HOOKS THEN SO I can release fish
and keep fishing until I kill enough to eat. By the way you don't loose anymore fish with barbless hooks than you do with barbed hooks.

Perch fishin's been great soon as the ice gets on, I have a tough time when open water shows up though.

Thanks Daileyman. For open water Perchin' find the brush or weeds and run worm harnesses right on the edge. 10 to 15ft of water seems to be the magic weed depth in summer on many lakes I've found. Now you just have to figure out which bait and color spinner to use ;D

Seems like a pretty good site but not many people talking fish numbers. I can understand that as it could overwhelm your favorite fishing hole. :) Pete

Ice fished near Helena and Dillon in the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Moved to OKC and have only seen ice thick enough to fish on once. Walleye and crappie fishing was fantastic. Made it up to Dillon about five years ago and hit Clark Canyon. The only thing that had changed was all the ice houses, which were only used by a few people back when.

Ohh man I lived in p wood for the last three years. And still go back but don't really no the name of the ponds , also medicine lake is the best pike fishing in Sheridan county we had a flag every two minutes on smelt, right off main hyway briged, I don't miss that farm land one bit........ >:( :(

Plenty of pike in Med Lake, but not much for size generally. Do they still make you drill your holes by hand? I like to ice fish, but not enough to drill holes by hand.

Their are some big pike to be had in their average 5 lbs for us and biggest was 12 and we snapped off something large. I will say if any one gets stranded out in that country go fish it bobber and smelt or lures, or tip up and sit in the truck, the lake is huge!! I sat out with my auger as did locals and fish and guts never never stopped , seems how there is always thick ice I can't see how you would other wise....... But it is a no motor or power lake due to the federal refuge , ohh ya great pheasants around their.

Joined a year ago and yeah great site for info on ice and great fishin. moved here 3 years ago from eastern Washington and had hardly any ice there so ive never heard of iceshanty till I moved here. used to catch a ton a big sturgeon on the snake, to the tune of 50-60 a summer in the 4-8 foot range but that is all big gear and warm water fishing. Eager to learn more about the colder version of fishing now that my family and I live in Montana. Thanks for all your kind replies and help!

New to the site, Butte resident for 30 years, formerly of Helena and East Helena. Grew up fishing CF and Hauser, moved on to Clark Canyon when I relocated to Butte. Gave up on hard water for a number of years to raise kids , plus my spouse was terrified of frozen water.
Last year my son and his buddy talked me into going to Harrison and his mom into fishing Delmoe. She caught the first fish and is now a fan.

Look at the the top of the page. Go under the ads for all of the Site Sponsors (good people to do business with) and find the link for "Profile". New to the site, new to the 406. Grew up in the 618 (southern IL), and got on the hard water every chance I got (limited in the past decade).
Working on getting set up with a couple tip ups for pike, a hand auger + adapter for my drill, and a basic setup for jigging panfish, trout, and maybe walleye (2 rods, need 1 reel). Thinking about heading down to TRR for crappie/pike, or maybe over to Hyalite next weekend. Weather depending, of course. Not sure if I need a shelter and heater or not- I'll try picking my days for now.
Thanks to everyone for the tips, tricks, and advice in general. Looking forward to the fish not yet caught.

Hey all. I'm new to the site and just moved to Bozeman a little over a month ago. I'm originally from eastern Nebraska and the ice has been really hit-or-miss the last several years so I'm excited to have real winters and plenty of safe ice! I've been out to Hyalite Reservoir a few times already and been catching 2-5 fish per trip. I'm not used to trout through the ice so still learning. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

What kind of flasher are you looking for? I've got a Marcum M1 I've only used two times that I'm thinking about selling. Great flasher but I'm thinking about making the jump to digital pretty soon.

I live in Bozeman and work at Simms. Headed to Fort Peck with a bunch of other guys from Simms in Feb. Staying up at the dam and look forward to getting out there! We went last year for the first time as a bunch of newbies and Eddie helped get us on some lakers. I would love to figure out how to catch a walleye or pike up that way. They whipped us last year. But, we're better prepared and energized for them this year.
I look forward to learning from all of you and contributing any way that I can.

Ice lived here my whole life, but this is my first year trying to fish through the ice. I grew up fishing small creeks in the western half of the state, do this is a different game for sure.
