I should post a picture of the setup I cobbled together to make it easier to fill the one pounders, makes it a piece of cake! Unfortunately the anti refillers would probably collapse in shock - so i will refrain.  >:D

I get a kick about how some think it is a sin to do this, to each their own i guess, but i have been using refilled bottles for years here, just be carefull and use your head you will be ok.  I have never worried about transporting them either.  never once when i have been pulled over have they asked to see the propane bottles, and if they did how would the tell if it was a new factory one, or one i filled the night before?? that part of the warning label is just to cover the company that makes the tanks.  once they are empty it is your business what you do with them, trash or fill back up.  they just dont want to be held accountable for HOW you fill them correct way or incorrect way.  I think that it is great to refill insted of just by new ones kind of like recycling less waste.

I still can't believe this is still debated. I've been filling them for many  many years without any issues. Like others have said , just use your head and do it safe as you can. Please inspect you greenies all the time though, they get rusty and damaged valves and threads over time. Be safe !

Reminds me of the whole ink cartridges in my HP inkjet printer thing.  They say refilling the cartridges voids the warranty.  They claim there will be major damage to the print heads.  They spend millions of dollars to try to make it hard to use anything but brand new, factory fresh, HP ink cartridges.  It costs me roughly $60 to replace all of the cartridges in my printer.  And they last for roughly 30 pages the way I seldom print.  I spent $13 for a refill kit.  I've filled 3 black cartridges and 9 color cartridges, and haven't put much of a dent in the refill kit.  And without problems.  Seems to me that the outfit making millions of dollars on disposable cylinders is trying to scare people in to buying more instead of filling their own.

I have had the adapter for a few years now to fill pounders. Have filled many pounders with no issue and no leaking valves. An o-ring cap will seal the pounders against leaks.(machinists can make them) Locally I am paying $10 for 20lbs and $40 for 100lbs of LP so you do the math. Since I can't use atvs or sleds on the lakes I fish I have to walk. There is no way I am hauling bulk tanks around and adding tons more weight and bulk to an already heavy and hard pulling sled.

I had my 20 pounders filled for $5.82 US, that comes to right around $0.30 per 1 pounder.

It's about $16-$18 here in western NY to fill a 20lb tank - typical

Ah, the good old 1lb propane thread. I see the safety nuts and misinformed are at it again.

Here's a vid how to refill them properly.

Looks like a lot of work for a $1.50.  Lets see you need a scale, a special hose, room in the freezer, and the 20lb tank needs to be at room temperature.

been doing it for a few years also, never a problem.never used a scale it stops when its full.you do need the adapter,i think putting the 1lb tank in the snow is pretty easy i don't need to use freezer cause i don't use them in the summer.i  save about $25 a season and recycle.but to each his own.great info on this site whether you agree with it or not.

Not quite $1.50 more like $2.50 to $3.50 a piece or more in my area depending on where you buy them.  One could do the easy thing and leave the small tanks outside to freeze but I wouldn't expect an engineer to think outside of the box like that. ;-)

Where is this special hose you speak of?

Were you the guy that destroyed his snowblower  in front of my garage? I see that someone sucked up one of Tess' retrieving sticks and that pretty much ended clearing my driveway! lol

IH722  You are correct I was not thinking outside the box, or in this case outside the freezer.  :P  I still do not think the wife is going to be very happy with a propane cylinder in the house. ;D

let alone the saved money, I like to refill them and not just throw more trash away.  Me alone I would throw away 15-20 a year easy.  How many of us throw away 10+ a year?  do the math and how many tanks are used one time and trashed across the country?  seems like lots of extra waste in the land fill.

You spend over $4 each for a bottle of propane? You are getting ripped off big time! Or just flat out lying to us to prove your point.

I do not have a parts list, I purchased the tank connections from Fleet Farm where they have the Mr. Heater parts/hoses, the valve that is inline is a gas valve, the needle nose is used to pull up on the pressure relief valve to reduce the pressure in the tank to get the whole 16.4 ounces of liquid. Naturally in use the 20 pound tank is turned upside down to transfer liquid.

So why don't the manufacturers just recycle the tanks?  Not trying to start anything, just wondering.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My guess would be that it is too costly.

Liability issues as well.  They would probably have to indicate that it was a refilled tank, and some lawyer would have a heyday when someone had any kind of problem.  Even if the user was the cause of the problem.

I have a hose attachment that goes to my 1000 gallon LP tank.  I use this to fill my 11# shorty tank and then I fill the 1# bottles from this. I've done dozens w/o incident and with LP atunder $2.00/gallon much of the time and weighing 4# per gallon it just makes sense.  If I valued my time at $50/hr no way it would never work, but to me it's less about the $$$ and more about the principle.  Less crap in the landfill.  90% of teh refills that I do are for my Brother and I don't charge him a dime for any of it.

Open the valve and set it by a lit heater, see if you can get it to blow...

We aren't shooting them, we are using them in shanties for heat.
