Same pattern in Upper Michigan Terry...right at the end of the ice season, early/mid March, they start picking up

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I  don't want to waste the trip; maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so m

I have found that the burbot action really starts up mid to late Feb. and carries on until the end of March.

That is because they are spawning the end of February.  They are one of the only freshwater fish that spawns while there is still ice.

About the time you are in MB it should be picking up TGF. The burbot move out of deeper water for there spawning season. Its not too hard to get numbers of trophies in late feb - end of march.
YOu can only get skunked so many times before you have to shower, Peeeeuuuuw

Yeah similar here Trevor. Picks up mid Feb, peaks late Feb and into 1st week of March. Then peters out mid March on.

Hey Saskman.

I have also found if you can get between them and the spawning grounds you can also do very well.  I fish in about 10-11 feet and have been successful in intercepting them on the way to spawn.  If it seems to slow down then I will either move to a spot in the area or look for them in more shallow water.

I always search for sandy or silt covered (mud) bottom.  The silt areas are preferred as you can jig some of the silt off the bottom which really works well in attracting burbs and every other fish following the burbot spawn.  Sand is a close 2nd for good area.  Rocks are way down the list for me.  Fishing right next to a rock bed is fine but I have never caught many fishing over top of rocks when the spawn is on.

Here in Alberta, Canada the spawn can start even earlier than mid-Feb but the most consistent is Mid-Feb to Mid-Mar.

Hope this helps.

on a muddy bottom when they are spawning you can from 3-9ft of water and bounce your hook on the bottom they will come and if the water is clear look down your hole when they come to your hook but don't bite that's when you
lift the hook above there heads and when the swim under it you bump them on the head with the hook they turn around and bite with in a couple seconds

o and the time we usually do good is late Feb until about 3 weeks into march
