The Ice Fisherman
By Reel Nurse

The fog steals a kiss from the ice
While the lake watches, frozen in a pose
And as the sun wakes up the horizon
We hear the man, drilling his holes

One, by two, by three, by four
Scoop, sounder, minnow, hook
Zipping up the shanty door
Before he knows it, “tip-up, look!”

An orange flag screams in the air
The man, he hustles, unaware
That as it is spinning and taking line out
That on the other end is a beautiful, big brown trout

Trout, perch, pike, bass
They’ve all held the gaze of the man holding fast
To a line that’s much deeper than any fishing hole
It’s the ice fisherman that consumes his soul

We see the first tease of color
As the monster’s belly passes under the hole
The fight is on!  It begins!
The fish comes, he runs, before he knows it he has surrendered his soul

Time stands still, as the man and fish finally meet face to face
Through the middle of the ice
Its heavy body more than challenged the pace

He has caught the fish and he holds it up
Triumph, victory, a little luck!
Still on his knees, he wipes his brow line
His heart is pounding, so alive

His wrinkly hands for a moment again look young
As he puts the fish back down the hole
He giggles like a boy at the fun

The sun is setting, the trees are creaking
The wind begins eagerly pushing him home
Reluctantly, he starts to pick up
He can't help feeling free, yet somberly alone

Before he closes his eyes to an infinite sleep
He thinks of fishing them up and fishing them deep
As he’s overcome by a peace, that he finds only out on the lake
He passes on and surrenders, praying the Lord his soul to take

Beautiful.  That's how I hope to go, doing something I love.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Nice. You should post this on the general page! Or the NY page!

Thank you everyone for your response! You guys are too kind! I'm gonna go ahead and post this to the general chit chat page as some people suggested. Why not right! So sad ice fishing season is coming to a close! At least we have a couple more weeks!

I want to ask if you had written that yourself because that sure is one of the best poems I have read.
