Proper offseason storage of ice gear
« on: Mar 15, 2019, 06:30 PM »
I hate to say it but it's time for me to put my ice fishing gear away till next year. So, with this season winding down anyone have any tips for properly storing an ice shanty and keeping the rodents out. A couple years ago I had the canvas on my shanty destroyed by mice while in storage. Thanks

Just keep it in an area with no mice and your good to go. I haven’t don’t any maintenance/ cleaning to my clam in the past 4 -5 years and it’s still like new. Probably helps if it’s dry when put away.

i have  a  frabil recon  rather  inexpensive   shanty  but  they  have  one  great idea   then top  is  fairly  easy to  take off and  you  have a storage  tub that  comes  with it but it in the  tub  and  it's  save .....  other then that  hang  them  up  from the  roof  no mice ...augers  grease the  blades! i  hang  all my rod  bags  my  flasher  goes  in my  den under  my  desk   power  auger   has  fuel  removed ......then  go trout fish  life is  good

I use a kayak/canoe lift (2 pulleys) to raise my Clam flip over up to the rafters in my barn. I made a 2x4 frame; I put the sled on the frame and strap it to the frame. Easy to raise up and never any mice.

I have an otter ice shanty, the canvas cant be easily removed, it has screws that hold the canvas to the sled. I like the idea of hanging it from the rafters, maybe I'll try that

I have been using moth balls in the ice gear during the summer and in the boat for the winter. They seem to work very well as there is no evidence of mice ( or moths ).

you can get mouse repellent at  camper  dealers!  drier sheets and  moth balls  work  but  air  your  stuff out good  before you use it

Have been using Mouse magic for years with no problem.  Clean out your shack and throw a few bags of mouse magic in it and cover it up.  I hang mine in the shed and when fall comes i pull it down and get ready for ice.

Dryer sheets and moth balls. Just air it out for couple days in late fall/early winter before you start using it.

Lol this.

I live in an apartment and everything goes in the corner of a closet. An end-of-season gear cleaning session has become ritual to me.

Just dumped the gas out of the auger and ran it till it would run no more. Washed it up and sprayed with silicone. I will hang it in the basement tomorrow. Starting to think crappie and watching that bobber go down. >:(

I was thinking about thoroughly drying my clam flip over, putting in dryer sheets, then having to it shrink wrapped a professional boat shrink wrap guy and storing in the garage on the ground/floor

My stuff just got thrown in the corner pile today.  There are 5 shanties and 2 jet sleds stacked.  They will most likely be like that when I pull them out in November.
My tomcat patrols the mice.

Been a fantastic 2018-19 season for me .
In 5 months I'll be itching for 19-20.

Be well all .
