Have had good success using 4-5" dead shiners on a #4 single hook with 24" of 20lb. flourocarbon (my same rig for pike).  I usually catch most of my bass in less than 10' of water over weedbeds.

HEY BEN, CRAPPIE ATTITUDE HIT IT ON THE HEAD. THE SAME RIG YOU USE FOR PIKE IS DANDY FOR LARGEMOUTHS. WE CANT SEEM TO GET SMALLMOUTHS ON TIPUPS THOUGH. I THINK SNPPPIN A SONAR OR CICADDIA
WORKS BETTER FOR SMALLIES, ESPECIALLY AT FIRST ICE.

Fish a 2-3' heavy monoleader (firewire 10#) tied to a barrel swivel tie that to your ice line put a slide weight above the barrel swivel.  I fish a 2/0 circle hook (black) with med/large shiners.  Fish them between 6" off the botton to 12" below the ice.  Try a few different depths with your bait to see what hits.

Fish in atleast 8' of water. Anything less than that will be too cold.Look for drop offs or where there is a warm water current.

Tight lines!
And the winner is>>>>

We use a 2' leader of 8-10lb test mono attached to a barrell swivel. We leave the shiner 6"-1' off the bottom in roughly 14'-18" and have been hitting smallies like there is not tommorrow. The area we are in is near a good drop off with a rocky bottom.

I use 18 inch 20# mono leader with a live shiner, usually about a foot of the bottom. I look till i find the edge of the weeds and work the edge good. I catch alot of largemouth and the occassional pike this way.

I had great luck with smallies last year, found a drop off that goes from 12-19' and I fish all around this drop. We have 18-24" leader with small circle hooks and a medium shiner and some good patience.

Use circle hooks self setting and lose fewer fish. I also place a red spinner blade with two red beads just above the hook adds color, flash and sound. Caught some very nice fish using this method. Concentrate on the structur of your lake or pond dropoffs next to weedlines fare very well. Good luck and keep fishing

Unless you have heavy cover, six pound fluorocarbon leader is all you need. The best fluorocarbon for me has been the P - Line Fluorocarbon Leader Material. Strong as heck and invisible. Tip your leader with a small, quickstrike rigged minnow. Use about a 3" minnow as bass seem to like smaller things in the winter, and rig it with a pair of #12 trebles. Bass seem to be located mostly around the base of the first drop off in lakes or reservoirs into deeper water.

i usually only have luck with the smallies during the winter, i use medium shinners, w/ 2/0 hook a few feet below the ice. mono leader is a must for bass but pike neve seem to care, seems like they would bite a piece of rope with justa rusty hook.

Pretty much what these guys said ...... I like the Mosquito hooks put out by owner...1/0 or 2/0.... we use huge shiners for bass here where i fish 4-7" still catch little ones on the big bait.
How can you be icefishing if you're sitting at your computer???

The setup I use is a 1/0 size RED Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp BaitHolder hooks.  I tie them directly to 12# Spiderwire with a Surgeons Knot.  You need to add a little spit to help cinch it tight.  This is my leader which is about 1.5 ft long tied to a size 2 ball bearing swivel which is then attached to the standard Braid line on the spool.  I only use medium/large shiners because it keeps the little ones from biting.  I may get fewer flags but most always bigger fish.  Believe me, I have caught many a fish with a snapped mono line and hook still in the fish.  I even caught a nice pickeral last year that had a piece of fishing line coming out its wastehole.  I snipped it but left the rest in the fish because I didn't want to kill it by pulling the hook through.  I only catch and release so they will be bigger next year. Here's a pic and if you look close you'll see the line dangling from the bottom of the fish.

Used a med shiner and placed it about 18" above the bottom in roughly 24-26 feet of water and landed a 21-1/2" 5lb largemouth this past weekend. Was great to see that big mouth coming up to the whole....

35 lb main line with a 14-20 lb leader and a single hook and a 3-5 inch shiner

quick strike are like an overkill
