NE ice conditions
« on: Mar 09, 2022, 12:31 PM »
Has anyone been out on any of the NE IN lakes in the last couple of days (James, Clear, Crooked)? Haven't seen anybody on webcams and the ice is looking dark, but given how thick it was less than a couple weeks ago makes me think it might be good for one more weekend...

you should be able to cash in on the channelcat fillets there about now.  they will be in those shallow channels at ice out on sunny days.  they will drop the bait if they feel any resistance, after picking it up thopugh.  they eat very well this time of year.

The whole chain is full of them. The barncoat brigade didn't leave many gills but I got some.

I don't think you'll have to get very far from the state line to get on ice.

I know plenty of non-Amish like that.

yes society is definitely loosing integrity.  i dont see as lot of "English" (as we are called) that load a pontoon boat and keep everything they catch.  im betting your just talking about regular people that keep their limits though.  i know lots of those types. ;D  im one of them for sure.  i eat loads of fish and keep my elderly friends, that dont or cant fish anymore, supplied.  eating fish isnt a crime.  at least it isnt yet.

I too like to keep plenty of fish and feel good about giving alot away to those that love fish but cant get them on there own. I believe i only keep what a body of water can take or needs to replenish itself. I'm not a trophy fisherman but like to catch trophy fish as well as meat run fish. I guess i've never been on a body of water that i think was over harvested. I have seen declines in size from other problems. Mostly caused from run off(farming) and housing. Over my life time i have seen some lakes go down hill as far as size, not numbers and i've seen lakes improve. I'm not against harvest measures that make good since like pan fish limits on Some bodies of water and experimental lakes to try and give those that are really into trophy fishing and catch and release. Alot of folks believe its a beard problem but i truly believe its water quality more than anything.

"Just keep their limits?" What limits? There is no limit on bluegill in Indiana.

Had a CO pull his boat up next to mine to talk and kill time while he watched two Amish catching crappies. When they left he met them at the launch. I watched them count fish for almost twenty minutes. Live ones went back in the lake. They had over 250 crappies in buckets.

Holy crap! I hope he wrote them a ticket. I've seen them get off by playing dumb when they damned up a stream to make a swimming hole.

they do that in all areas of life also.  some are very underhanded these days!  i watched them haul off 4 buckets of crappie gills bass at gene stratton porter.  they had buckets hid up on the island before they pulled them and left.  they also let a bunch lay all over the ice when we started to walk out.

no, no limit on gills.  no need from what i see.  but people do mistake redears all the time.
