Good idea..I like it... yah reel above the water....     What happens when the hole freezes up?

There is a reason tip-up spools are in the water  :tipup:

Those are nice and great job..but a soup can top and bottom for a spool?those thing rust out so fast with even a little bit of moisture on them.they rust before i can even recycle them.better than anything ive built tho but a plastic spool would be much less work,last longer but probably more costly.just my worthless opinion that doesn't matter.

If you are using them in a popup the reel being above water would not matter as much if you are using a heater.  :tipup:
