Jaw Jackers and Automatic Fisherman in Minnesota??
« on: Dec 18, 2013, 10:00 AM »
Hey guys, I thought I would share this here:

Minnesota is the only state in the nation banning the use of automatic fishing devices such as the Automatic Fisherman and Jaw Jacker.

It is benefical to use these devices because they offer the angler a faster hook set, preventing the injestion of the bait and reducing mortality to fish.

The concern behind these automatic style fishing devices is they are considered spring loaded. This is a misconception because technology has changed. The rod sits in reel seat, then is bent down into a clip. As the fish bites, it pulls on the line, disengages the clip, and releases the rod- thus setting the hook on the fish The angler then manually reels up the fish.

On the Great Lakes of Wisconsin, using the automatic fishing devices is very popular for lake trout, and in smaller lakes it is used for northern pike.

Depending on your opinion, you can sign a petition here and help get these devices legalized in Minnesota.

My family signed up. If nothing else just for the principle of the fact the state is over regulated as it is.

The Land of 10,000 Laws....

Yeah, it's crazy that Minnesota is the only state to list them as Illegal. I bought mine to use at my cabin in Western Wisconsin and was bummed that I couldn't use them in Minnesota. Great for a deadstick rod, They replaced tipups for me because gut hooking a fish and handlining them in on 50lb Tip-Up line lost it's appeal when I could fight them on a rod and reel and then release them afterwards. But that's just my opinion!

Had no idea , but the jaw jacker to me seems that a fish is LESS likely to get gullet /gut hooked .

I called dnr a couple months ago asking about why there illegal after I purchased them not knowing they were. The dnr woman got upset with just because I mentioned the jawjacker. It's ridiculous that that it's banned here. A lot more fish would be less at risk of dying use the jawjacker than tip ups. If Minnesota thinks it's so bad to use, than why does all the other states legalize it?

You can count on me signing the petition. Thanks for making this. We need a hell of a lot more people than just on ice shanty to be signing this though.

Agreed, I figured odds are this will lead to nowhere and the MN DNR will be stubborn and bullheaded on this topic like they have been the last 3 or so years. But it only took me a minute to express my opinion, and thought that it was better than doing nothing at all. In the grand scheme of things, I doubt this petition will matter but hey where's the hurt in trying?

We get just 2 lines.  As long as we are attentive to our standard tipups there is little damage to fish.

I am not going to bash the idea, I just don't support the use of them.

Wouldn't it be great if ALL fishermen had the high quality ethics you and I share.

It's just better over all, in the interest of conservation.

I feel sure others feel the same and would never use such a device, even if the law demanded.

You may notice, I modified my post that you took issue of.    ;)2

Oh yeah, beautimus on the change.   Thanks.

We are allowed 5 lines, with 5 hooks on each, (a treble is one hook), and two lines, is one more than I can work with well, ha.  I don't have either of those, but am sort of handy.   Even this far from civilization, my "devices" have gathered a crowd at times. That's what I get for spreading them out.  Nice chattin' DC.    ;)2

25 feet away from my tip up today. Flag went up, I ran. Pulled up a really nice large mouth bass. 3, maybe 4 pounds. Moral of story, it was gut hooked deep down within those few seconds it took me to run that far. Put fish immediately down the hole and it looked like it wasn't going to be a happy ending for the fish. So yea, having a mechanical device to set the hook right away would be nice. No way can anybody tell me we don't need them, or that they don't work, or maybe you should be closer to your tip up. How many people do you know that set there tip up right next to them?

To release a gut hooked fish that you don't think will make it, is comparable the the way the indians waste fish annually netting on Mil Lacs lake. If you don't eat bass, at least keep it & offer it to someone in your neighborhood that likes fish. the justification for the jaw jacker eludes me at this point. If I pull a fish out of the water that's been that deeply hooked I keep it. I hope it doesn't become legal in this state. If you can't manage 2 lines as it is what's the point?

So, Jon, your misunderstanding of it's purpose is your justification for your negative vote, which is a vote against the fish caught by idjits in the gut, which would never happen if they used a Jaw Jacker.   Good luck enforcing your personal morals of fishing, on idjits.   ;)2
Common sense is truly not too common.  Sometimes, simple caveman logic might just be a good solution.
