Alternate fish species
« on: Jan 26, 2005, 02:26 PM »
Hi everyone,

Have any of you ever tried ice fishing for carp or suckers before? If so what did you use to catch them? Did you use chum like corn, and how did you fish them, and what bait or lure did you use? I always like to try new species and wondered if they are catchable through the ice, I know they are in the open water season. Good fishing

I have been with people who have caught suckers through the ice while fishing for pike, the suckers will hit almost anything, they fight like walleye for the most part.

I guess i should tell you the story so it doesn't confuse anyone, the guy was getting coffee from the truck so he just through his rod down and then his hook was resting on the bottom the whole time so when he came back and picked up his rod, he had a fish on and it was a sucker.

Caught 2 big suckers a couple of years ago deadsticking frozen shiners lying right on the bottom, while trying for pike.  They do fight good.  Released both of them, as I find white suckers too bony to try to fillet.

Thanks for the info monophil. I will try that some time, a minnow lying on the bottom could catch me a sucker, pike or burbot. Good Fishing
