Title: Tabor Point access
Post by: PenguinIII on Feb 20, 2022, 07:38 AM
Has anyone been driving on at the Tabor point launch ramp on Hog island recently. Will be up that way this week. Just wanted to see how the ice is holding up at the ramp. Any pressure cracks forming? Thanks in advance, tight lines.

Normal pressure cracks, area by the ramp is pretty beat. Warm temps this week won’t help.

Access is good right now, but with the warm weather this week trucks might make a mess before it freezes again this weekend. Derby this weekend so there will be more than normal traffic.

That’s good news Jeff, let’s hope the access holds up during this warm spell, thanks.

‼️‼️ URGENT ‼️‼️
‼️‼️ ANYONE FISHING MISSISQUOI BAY ‼️‼️
Please be advised - from Martindale Point across Martindale Reef and all the way to High Rocks there is an extremely dangerous crack in the ice that has heaved up and is impossible to cross. The ice is broken up for about 100 yards wide.

There was 8-10 trucks out of 78 access now. A night of rain and freezing temps Thursday will make it nice and smooth this weekend.

Curious if the crack at Donaldson point before Campbell's is still being crossed by trucks?

Trucks were again out there this morning, but no one was past the crack.

Can anyone show using a map or describe where the crack is at Donaldson point?

From 78 access up to Campbell's. The last point before Campbell's is Donaldson point, just under 2 miles from bridge. Crack from point all the across to alburgh.

I crossed it in a truck on Saturday 2/19.  These cold temps should stiffen everything up before the snow and make it safe.  I'm hoping to go up that way again on Sunday.

I'm not judging anybody for enjoying the sport however legal. But... theres a part of your reply that just gives me a feeling of curiosity, and i wonder why certain decisions get made in this sport.

Honestly tho that crack forms every year, usually first ice. This year it opened up the after the islands derby. I drove over it a few times. With the warm weather I would be more cautious.

VT-Jig, what is it about my statement you  are curious about?

VT-Jig, what is it about my statement you  are curious about?
I guess it just seems a bit risky TO ME to drive over ice hazards, in my own personal opinion, so I'm curious as to why people do it... If its simply that it just doesn't scare the hell outta you as a fisherman , then the more power to ya,  definitely fish them honey holes,  man.    ;D         im also the guy who gets irrationally nervous when 30" thick ice starts singing.  So go figure.  ::) ;D

I drive on the ice because I am comfortable doing it when I have been paying attention to the ice conditions and know the area i'm fishing well.  I have lived and fished on the lake 50 years, I know where the safer spots to drive are and when the ice is going to be questionalbe for driving on.  If a spot looks risky I get out and walk it with a chisle and test it before I porceed.  It saves an incredible amount of time driving and effort driving on not to mention being warm and out of the wind.  Your concern is a sign of high intellegence.  You my friend will never be a Darwin award candidate and that is a very good thing for you and your family.

Live and let live.  You dont drive on the ice thats fine.  You'd hate to have a bunch of guys give you crap for your decision not to drive on....I do it because its no more dangerous than walking on 4" and because its awesome.

Fished tabors today, drove on. Straight out from the ramp there is a hole, watched two trucks get stuck in it today. Avoid that and it’s fine.

I can't disagree with that logic.  ;D

Some of my most memorable trips were the first times I drove on champlain ice.  I even put my 600hp tahoe on it last year.  I guess im not the risk adverse type.

I drove over the crack at Donaldson point yesterday.  There was about 6 other trucks that did it as well.  About 28"-30" of ice up that way.

Yesterday the wind blew the snow off that crack and it is fully visible. I  crossed it all weekend but would definitely check it out before crossing make sure it's safe. I guarantee some parts of that crack are not safe to cross.
