Yeah Travis I'm traveling from 10 minutes away and I know you only have to travel 8 minutes...can you tell me how much snow fell in the last 40 seconds?   lol
I can't believe that people won't even read 3 posts up from where they ask the same question that was answered 3 times already.  I was waiting for this BS board so I could vent!
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011
Post by: lovetoshoot on Jan 13, 2011, 07:13 PM
I had to change my ID because of problems with my computer.  I'm glad because I don't have as many PMs asking me for exact conditions from people that travel less than I do!  If your going to go fishing and the ice is variable conditions...are you really going to take the word of some one you never met?   Look for general conditions and make friends with a few and share info over phone or PM.
BS here instead of reports page and when some one shares a tip with you that pans out...keep it to your self!  Most of all, if you get access from private property, treat it like you would want your property treated.  I've never invited 50 people to park on my lawn, have you?  There ....I feel better!   lol  Off my soap box!
I really do like most of the people I've met from this site, but every now and then......LOL

Nice rig Nate!  I had a very similar set up for my 5600 until I switched to a guide.  In heavy snow dragging by hand you'll want it higher I think.  I had 10 " of ground clearance and on Chautauqua it still plowed snow.  I love that you can use machines on the lakes in NY.  PA is so much of a pain with the fish and boat commission and the DCNR having rules and regs.  They just blame each other when you complain and nothing ever changes.  Next week looks like when the snowmobile hits the lake for fishing. I don't charge as much as Nate for the ride back!  lol   ;)

finally a BS board with any luck the guys bickering in the reports board will just go away.. I mean come here and free the condition s board up. As always  it is snowing we are expecting another 4-8" general snowfall before the lake effect gets cranked up again. The snow is deep the slush sucks, but the fish are still there. It is getting annoying in the reports section having a couple people report the conditions and then 2 posts later someone asking exactly what the report reported. Snow is deep drag is tough ice is decent  none of this is gonna change anytime soon.

Thanks, love my 5600 so had to come up with some way to drag easier. I used it last week at Mayville drag was so much better. As long as there is a path I think the height is fine. Nice to be able to ride on the lake for sure. Have to have tags, ins, helmet and tow bar if towing...The drag back is always the worst   :woot:

The reports page is out of control. I can't believe how many ppl can't do the research.

Nate,  did things change from last year?  Last year I was told that the tow bars were only needed if people were passengers in the towed sled.  That way we were able to help out a few older gentleman that were struggling to pull their huts.  We just connected the ropes and pulled 3 or 4 huts at a time.  Did some one say something different to you?

The tow bar / direct connect is the rule only if someone is riding on a towed sled/hut. Otherwise, a rope is fine.

Ok, yeah I believe your right. I usually have someone hanging on back there anyhow!! Good to know though for pulling huts behind my sleigh.

Heard a few different stories about quads getting stuck this weekend...hopefully the conditions get better.

Does the person have to wear a helmet if riding on towed sled/hut?

Thank you in advance.

My understanding from the sheriff's department last year was that they were going to enforce the "helmets on all riders" laws. They never did while I was out there, but all my riders had helmets.  They also had told me that they were going to fine the people riding double on single machines.  I didn't see that either!  lol  I wish they would enforce the proximity speed limit.  Sleds and ATV's are supposed to be slowed to slowest speed possible within 100 feet of people or shanties.

Was out on the lake a few weeks back at Pendergast and caught quite a few perch. Saw one quad out but ice was ~5" and slush and snow quite heavy. Was thinking about taking my son this weekend and wanted to bring the quad. Can anyone tell me if chains are a must as I currently do not own. Also, is anyone seeing quads off of pendergast. Hoping the warm weather today and cold the rest of the week helps with the slush and snow.

I hear that there are quads going out. I have also heard they're getting stuck in the slush. I have chains on mine but only have 2WD. I'm taking it out this weekend hoping the the conditions are better  ::) Looks like the next few nights are going to be single digits, should harden up for us.

Crazy thing happened today.  Fishing perch this am I have a good hit and end up breaking off looseing my jig.  Only one of that kind with me I might add.  Tie on another and proceed on catching fish.  About two hours later end up catching a good perch that has my jig from earlier hooked in its lower jaw.  Never would I guessed to get a fish to bite twice.

thats cool travis that happened with me and a buddy catching tiger muskies up here in cassadaga. one of us lost our jig (damn expensive rapala I might add) caught a little while  later on a small jig  , actually ended up with one hook in it  and tangled the other's line pretty wild 10 minutes or so . We were fishing crappies.   And damn I wish I had the time you have travis this year is killing me so far . It is still early though

Should have stayed in bed this am.  Lost my gaf down the hole, battery died on the finder, lighter died, and had to throw back two good eating eyes.  Snow was twice as deep as yesterday on the east side of the lake.  Drag is not gonna be fun if this snow keeps up.  Gonna start hitting the west side.

I heard something about the gaf ..like your not allowed to carry one is this true..if thats true good thing my ice scoop has a hooked end i used it last year to pull a walleye out off the hole  after i tried just lifting it out on the line and he came of the hook and gulped the air 2 times enough time for me to shove the hooked thing in his gill and pull his a'' out  ;D haha

Use of gaffs
Use or possession of gaffs or gaff hooks is prohibited when
fishing in freshwater, including the Hudson River upstream
of the Tappan Zee Bridge, except when ice fishing.

Here is the copied section of regulations.

Just curious.... how do you guys think the calico fishery in this lake is gonna be in the next 5 years... seems like most of the fish ive caught in the past 3 years in the spring or winter have all been solid healthy 9 inchers or better... havnt really thrown alot of undersized fish back over the years (dont catch many).... also notice that most of the calico are over 11 inches not your boarderline 9 inchers....
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011

If you and your buddy stay on them like you have there will be very few to catch!  lol j/k  In the spring with my friend we were on some schools of smaller fish the last couple of years. We have had a little bit of trouble finding as many as my friend was used to in years gone by though.  I've only fish the lake from shore in the past and it had become such a circus that I quit fishing for them for years. I would like to get on them at night through the ice, but haven't made the time. I love that late night action when the ice is popping and most people have gone home, slight slack line on spring bobber, set the hook......PRICELESS

I also have a 7 year old daughter who loves to ice fish with her dad, I am enjoying it for now, because I know her interests in both me and fishing may be replaced when she reaches a certain age I sure hope in  a few years she will still be into this and have her own account here.

Well im past that certain age but I pretty much grew up at Chautauqua Lake My uncle owns 2 cottages out there and it was our weekend home till my grandfather got really sick and we couldn't go on the weekends ....I also enjoy open water fishing My brother and I used a friends kayaks and after catching our limit on crappies we purchased our own kayaks. I love fishing out of a kayak ...to keep her into it  try some new things maybe even a canoe if a big boat can't be bought. When Spring comes I can't wait to paddle into some bay's and see if the crappie are there again like last year  ;D

Hogan's Hut is on 394 right next to I-86, if you're coming from the I-90 raynors emporium is right on 394 in westfield, about a mile or 2 towards the lake after you get off the thruway

How much more snow for slush making?  Anyone want to guess what this storm will dump on us this week?
I thought that we might start getting rid of snow storms when lake Erie froze.  lol NOT!!!

The slush was terrible Sunday. Went out of Midway, and was a foot deep. Ended up dragging hut back later, and joining a friend at Burtis. Slush was bad there also. Dragged his hut in, and had to go back out to help him pull his sled in. It looked like he was snow plowing with the sled. Worst drags I ever had. Fishing is definitely slower than the last 2 years. Ton`s of dinks.

Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011
Post by: marcus on Feb 02, 2011, 03:54 PM
gomaco your best bet, and to keep the people of the institute happy would be to launch  mayville or prendergrast and drive to the bell tower. The parking is very limited and already way too crowded. I have seen people launch atv's here, but I personally do not think it is a good idea due to parking and the fact that it is private and can be yanked at any time. Also it is not a long walk to the productive area. I know it is slushy, but there is much better places to launch a machine.

We took our ATV's from Prendergast Access Point to the Bell Tower last year. On the way back we stopped several times and caught more perch there than at the Bell Tower. Probably due to the lack of fishing pressure in the area. Get away from the crowds. it could be better.
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011
Post by: marcus on Feb 03, 2011, 08:19 AM
jimski I agree. I do not own a machine and with the slush as it is I am not venturing too far, but if I had the choice I would get away from the crowds. I have a good lake map and see some spots that are unreachable this year on foot, but if I had a machine would be nice to have an area all to myself.

I haven't seen any recent posts since the "storm" in regards to slush on the conditions thread so I figured I'd give it a shot here, hopefully without getting scolded.  Was thinking of fishing Saturday but I'm still hurting mentally and physically from a nightmare drag on Bear Lake.  Any recent updates on slush conditions?  Thanks in advance for any responses.

I fished cassadaga which was in worse shape than chatauqua  pre "storm", it is now 2 inches of snow on top of 10-12" pretty frozen slush. Nice walking for a small guy . Fishing was dead as usual and I only gave it 2 mid-day hours.

JonnyDarter, seen you guy's out there on Bear last weekend. Seen you or your buddy fall down and lay there a while. Bear is to tough to walk on, as bad as Mayville has been it's a breeze compared to Bear. I was glad to see your buddy get up. I thought we were going to have to call for help.
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011

Bear was horrific, as I'm sure most of the smaller lakes are out that way.  My friend had to take a breather after burying both legs in the slush and trying to move forward, haha.  Thanks for being observant though.  Ice was fine, everything on top of it was not.  Definitely not worth fishing.  Hopefully Chautauqua is in better shape...

flybuster go to one of the local bait shops (grizzly gary's, happy hooker, or hogan's hut) you can sign up there it is a team event it is for panfish it is a fun event with a cool looking trophy going to the happy hoo... wait I mean the winning shop. Gonna be a good time. fishing starts at 8am and ends at noon I assume we will hang out and fish after noon as well , at least I know I will. Come on down should be fun. the following saturday we are gonna have our second annual chatauqua get together at Long Point State Park. Hoping to do something for the kids again . Last year we had a derby for the kids and they all won something . I would like to do an adult, perhaps cash tourney that day also, but we would need to find someone willing to be a judge , seeing as I want to fish and dont think it would be a good idea  for a participant to be a judge.

I want to fish.
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011
Post by: flybuster on Feb 07, 2011, 09:01 PM
I dont think it would be bad if there was a team say, 3 judges that participated in the event, two judges score all entries and obviousley you cant score your own fish... I would have faith in a system like that anyway....as far as the money there is only so much hard water in wny you couldent hide forever :callcops:

Hey Gamehog... Never met ya but see you avidly fish... i was out last night for my normal calico bite and noticed that the water clarity around the weedlines has gradually been getting worse....mainly the past 10 days.... lastnite being the worst.... is the lake starting to turn or the weeds in deeper water dying off?  Just trying to stay on top of my game and understand the lake better...
Title: Re: CHAUTAUQUA LAKE BS 2011

100% correct. Two thoings happening.  Weeds are dieing off due to the lack of light.  Bugs are hatching.

Chautauqua has been terrible for me this year for size, and numbers. Been out 4 times only, but best day was 11 keepers. Two years ago it was much better. Maybe just the luck of the draw, but reports seem to suggest the same for most guys.
