Brought a bucket of shiners and met up with my buddy Todd at daybreak. We walked out on 4-4.5 inches of ice, and got set up as the sun rose. The action was steady until night! Dang that's fun. We caught them on tip-ups, we caught them on rods. Shiners, fatheads, suckers, smelt, jigging raps, blade baits --- everything worked. I guess they were hungry. Nothing huge today, the best went around 30", but we landed 30 pike. And one slab crappie. What a great day! Temps in the 40s, bright sunny day...good food, brews, and friends. That's what ice fishing is about!
If you're interested, fish porn below (pic heavy). ;D

Great pics, thanks for sharing!

Looks awesome!
I have a newbie question about tip ups in Colorado... They count as a pole and have to be monitored right? I'm about to start ice fishing and am wondering if I should get the extra pole license (tag ?) and put a tip up a little bit away from where I'm jigging?
Thanks for any help.

Yes! They count as a pole or a rod, and you need the extra rod stamp if you want to use two lines. That way, you can jig in one hole and use a tip-up in another. Or two tip-ups...or two rods, whatever you want.

Nice job Nate! I have been itching to get out with some buddies and have a "flag day" where we litter a weedline or piece of structure with flags and wait. This may have pushed me to get that on that outing on the books.
-
I figured with the background blurred it must have been public, that or you were playing with the portrait feature on your Iphone.

Way to go Nate, sounds like a great day!

Thanks, Mitch! Good to hear from you. Yeah, tip-up fishing is one of my favorites. I got into it when I lived back in MA. Let me know how you do out there in MN with them.

The background was blurred? My phone just sucks at taking photos. ;D

You're killing me. I target those stupid fish and can't find them and you come along and bust thirty in a day. I know you despise pike as table fare but those sure look like eating size to me.
Good job.

Great work on the pike, boil some of their fillets in saltwater for 3 minutes, they taste like walleye!

Yeah, looks like the troll's posts have been excised from this otherwise very family-friendly and wholesome thread. ;)
I know, Matt -- we saw that eye on that one. It was cloudy, but his other one was fine. He's obviously hunting just fine, since he ate a lively sucker.
