My buddy uses those Fish Brother's and loves 'em.  I use some older Beaver Dams, have some old Never Fails that I like, and also run a few windlass style Mr. Tip Ups.

I may get some dis agreement on this, but frankly I see no reason to buy the wxpensive ones A tip up, is a stike indicator, and nothing else, so is a bobber, and I am sure there are the guys who may be looking for the $15 approved by NASA bobber. I have the round traps, the plastic frabill ones and 3 of the wooden ones, that I got last year on clearance, The others, I have had for prolly 15-20 years. they all work, good luck , be safe

I like the classic ol’ Polars. Cheap, tough, and functional.

My favorite “tip-up” I’ve seen was when I was kid in the 90’s and my brothers friend coated the inside of old milk jugs with fluorescent paint, tied some tip-up line to the handle, then just laid the jug on the ice however long the line was away from the hole (long enough line for pike). It’s odd seeing a bright pink milk jug flying across the ice but when you did it was fun trying to beat it to the hole lol.

I use the HT florescent orange/green flags. And I have some old wooden ones, and a couple Frabil round ones.

I used to live down the road from Devil's lake in North Dakota  where I got a big pile of HT tip ups at year end clearance for 5 bucks apiece  - they seem to work ok   the other big thing I got living in North Dakota is the bait to put on those tip ups  -  used frozen dead fish- mostly frozen herring -  most waters its against the law to used live sucker minnows.  very common and almost as successful is to hook up a hot dog  not sure what brand is best   :)

I don't know that they even have a name, but they are very popular in Northwest Michigan - where they are made. They have the huge 1:1 orange spool, and usually green wood. I've never used anything else with as great of success. I've been beating the crap out of my same 3 for over 10 years and they still work the same as they did they day I bought them from a garage sale.

- Frabill Pro Thermal Insulated
-- not the top of the line tip ups but
decent and get the job done. The
price was right when I bought
them, $5 each with free shipping.
- I Fish Pros
-- just bought this year, seem to be
pretty nice. They do take up a little
bit of room in the sled. Definitely
like fighting the fish on rod & reel
     more then hand lining.
- Jaw Jackers
-- maybe not exactly a tip up, but
close enough. Jaw Jackers get an
     A+ from me.

Great Tip Ups! I have had two for over ten years that I use for lake trout. The reels have a large capacity and like you said one turn equals about one foot

They are called  "Big Reel TipUps" and are made in Suttons Bay Michigan.
The guy who used to make them retired and sold the business.

The New owner is Shane Dunklow. His number is 231-866-6354
He said the tip-ups are $15.00 each plus shipping, he may have a website or facebook page, but I'm not sure.

Good Luck All

My family made the big reel tip-ups for over 40 years before selling to the man in Suttons Bay back in 2K. They were the best for deep water fishing for Lakers as the line comes off the reel with no resistance.

That's very cool!

Doing a research paper on the history of "Big Reel TipUps" would be a great topic for anyone with kids at home looking for a topic on a paper.

Good Luck All

I do like to use the PVC steelie slammers too though. They aren't as forgiving or easy to deploy though.
