Lake Trout Bait
« on: Dec 12, 2011, 06:16 PM »
I have a buddy who lives up in Montana and says all the local use maple syrup breakfast sausage links for lake trout fishing.  He says the guys using this bait catch twice as many fish as the guys that don't anyone around here ever tried using it.  I'm just wondering if it works.

I have never tried it but that could be because it would be a crying shame for the fish to get a better breakfast than me! Might have to try it sometime as long as noone sees me. Anything is worth a try, I know some pretty unorthadox baits used for ling that you would never expect to work.

Reminds of the time grandma was ready to whoop me when I was a kid. Apparently grabbing a sack of mountain oysters out of the fridge for channel cat bait was frowned upon. Can't imagine her being any happier if I were to take her sausage links to bait a hook with lol    :nono:

Using sausage would be cheaper than bull heads(if you can find any that is)

I guess don`t knock it till ya try it. I wonder if it is the maple syrup or the pork they are keying on. If it is the syrup you could put it on your sucker meat or a tube jig. being greasy it probably leaves a sent trail in the current. Going to have to try it....Fishon

I'll have to ask him, I assume they are raw.  One other thing he said they thread the link sausage on so the line was going all the way through it with the hook out the bottom.  Must look like a big greasy worm to the fish.  LoL

I've never heard of this bait before, but I'll give it try.  If it works it will save a lot of stink on my gloves.  That syrup might leave a film in the water like oils from cisco's.
