Title: charging 7 or 9 amp batteries
Post by: tbulhead on Jan 17, 2016, 04:31 PM
When I plug my new 12 volt 7 amp battery into the charger to charge it after using it for a few hours today, the light on the charger is green not red.  Should I just leave it with the charger on for a few hours, disconnect it from the charger and use it the next time I go out, or drain it further and then charge it?

Buy a tester! You're guessing at the battery condition without one.

You should recharge your SLA batteries after each outing when possible ...let them warm up to room temp then charge ...what make/model charger do you have ? I have an old Vexilar charger ...plug it into wall first red light will glow then connect to battery ...light will go out ...then when charged up light will turn on red ...I have no green light.

I agree with RG. I use a meter so I can read actual voltage. Cost about $20.00 for the meter. But my batteries are closing in on 20 years old.

harbor freight gives testers for free with a coupon they email. sign up and get one. they only cost 6$ otherwise from them.
pinch the quick connects that are on the battery. it's a common problem. check your fuse if it has one. if it's blown, buy some that are one amp higher rated. buy a better charger such as a battery tender jr. they are 22$.

Give any charger something to do before plugging it in ~  connect it to the battery first, always.

And, unplug it before disconnecting it from the battery, always.

The exception is Vexilar instructions, which defy common electronic logical truths.

Oops, HWDH, you got in before my exception, ha.

Just think about it and , well, never mind.
