When I drove by the union ship canal in Buffalo it was frose over yesterday evening. Monday it was open water and choppy. It is amazing how quickly it can freeze. I will keep my eyes open for the first person "on top" of the ice. Stay Safe.

I was out on SBH this morning, we had 4"+ wherever we drilled.  Couldn't find bait this morning so we were all artificial, but not even a decent bite.  Water seemed pretty cloudy for SBH, never broke the camera out.  Anyone else have any luck there?

Hey guys, what do you usually pull out of the harbor?  I've been on a quest to fish as many new spots this season as possible (Im im the northwest corner of CT) For whatever reason this thread caught my eye.

You would be driving by 100's of better spots on your way here, mostly dink perch and dink gills, occasional keepers though.  Some pike and crappie too

I have generally done well on first ice at the harbor. There are big fish to be had but I agree the dinks move in and take over. Find the deepest parts and fish small. It works for me. Won't get there till Sunday and its killin me! Good Luck and be safe!

Never Know.  Early ice can bring some good size perch and nice pike.  If lucky can pull a laker or two.  See you all on sunday.

Laker???? Never seen a Laker come from the harbor. Have caught my share of Rainbows though. The harbor has always been hit or miss for bigger perch. You just have to be there when they are there. Been fishing there since the 70's and it's always a crap shoot, but fun for sure!!!!

Hey guys, what do you usually pull out of the harbor?  I've been on a quest to fish as many new spots this season as possible (Im im the northwest corner of CT) For whatever reason this thread caught my eye.

We fish the harbor frequently with my young son.  I am in agreement with most of the feedback.  You will find a lot of small perch and gills.  We have also pulled some really nice-sized perch occasionally.  The SBH is great for fishing with kids: they catch fish all day long, it is close to home, and the drag to the ice is short.

If you are looking for consistent size, you'll drive by a lot of great locations on your way from CT.  Oneida comes to mind for perch size and walleye numbers.
The older I get, the better I was.

the harbor is really hit or miss with the jumbo perch. but, when they are in there, it's a blast and the main school don't seem to stay long. although, a few do stick around. but, pike and steelies do cruise around thru out the season. as for the lakers being there, that's news to me.....
When hell freezes over, i'll be ice fishing there too!!

The principal species planted during
1976 were (in millions): lake trout 7.4,
chinook salmon 6.7, and coho salmon
6.2; together they accounted for about
78 percent of the year's total. The record
number of lake trout came primarily
from federal hatcheries and their
plantings were scheduled by the Great
Lakes Fishery Commission which
coord inates the lake trout rehabil itation
program. Other species were reared and
stocked by state and provincial agencies.
Additional major species in the
federal-state-provincial stocking programs
were some 3.2 million rainbow
trout and/or steelhead (lake-run rainbows)
yearlings and fingerlings and
over 1.7 million young brown trout.
Other members of the trout-salmon
family that were released in smaller
quantities during the year were brook
trout, splake (brook x lake trout hybrid),
Atlantic salmon, and tiger trout
(brook x brown trout hybrid). Other
species planted in singular locations
were fingerling saugers and muskellunge
in the Sandusky Bay

I've always thought splake don't breed so could it be possible some natural xbreeding has taken place.I'm down here in Dunkirk and I believe 3yrs.ago a TU group stocked I think 300 brookies in Canadaway to try to reestablish the coaster population.Coasters are schools of brookies that live in the lake and hug the shoreline not venturing out in more than 20 fow.I know the stocking is true because me and others caught several that Spring.
