"SOUTHEAST NY GET-TOGETHER"
« on: Nov 26, 2013, 01:57 PM »
YES... I know it's very early to discuss this, but last year we waited too long and things fell apart.  So, let's think about it now.........

LAKE HUNTINGTON  in Sullivan County has been our spot for the last few years.....any other suggestions (keeping in mind: Parking/access/easy walk to fishing area)????

HOW ABOUT A DATE????  Sometime in February.... maybe the week before the Highland Lake tourny??? We can get all "tuned up" for the contest!!

Any and all suggestions to make this get-together successful are greatfully solicited!!!  Any ideas guys ???

LET'S KEEP THIS THREAD NEAR THE TOP OF THE BOARD SO EVERYONE CAN CHIME IN !!!!

White Lake, Loch Sheldrake, Lake Superior, Chodikee Lake, Morningside Lake. All good ice fishing locations, with easy access. I'm sure all other these locations should be more than frozen by February, so a maybe the 1st weekend of that month?

Superior has ample parking ...that hill is tough to traverse in deep snow though   .White lake has sporatic snow removal and Swinging bridge is gated /closed. Huntington is nice but very limited parking .Any thing near Ulster co ? Don't forget most of Febuary is chock full of contests ...maybe a better idea is to meet at one of these private unfishable lakes . Monticello  has one on Sackett lake in Febuary  ...havent been to it in a while but good area with raffles/prizes 50/50 ....
just an idea .

haha! I agree. You'd be surprised at how many fish are left in that lake. Never hooked into one of the tigers the dec stockecd in there years ago, but usually catch lots of bass, pickerel, perch, bluegills, and crappies during open water. Ice is good for perch, bluegills, crappies. tip up action is modest, but you usually catch a decent number of pickerel, as well as the occasional bass

Not all of us live west of the river.  Its a long trek for us.  Ulster or something along the river would get us who live or east of it to participate.

GOT AN IDEA!!!!    How about we try this.......  I'll suggest two lakes in Sullivan Cty., One lake in Dutchess Cty., and one lake in Westchester Cty...... all of which should have safe ice by Feb.  Then we can vote and make a choice.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND........  This is not a "pick the lake where you can catch the most fish" kind of meeting.  This where we get a chance to actually put a face to the names we've been talking to all year, a chance to show off our gear, tell stories (lies), cook out on the ice, and generally have a real fun day.  If we catch fish....it's a bonus!!

WESTCHESTER CTY........   East Branch (Sodom) Reservoir.  (DEC Permit required )

DUTCHESS COUNTY........  Sylvan Lake
                                       Whites Pond
SULLIVAN CTY.......          Lake Huntington
                                      Lake Superior State Park

As a final suggestion, if we can't decide on a lake that makes most of us happy..... we can meet at the tournament at Highland Lake around Valentines Day.

Cast your votes folks...............

Well my vote would be for Sylvan lake but I'm biased seeing as how I live just up the hill from it. But I also know that it's a very deep Lake and does not always freeze. Depending upon the number of people going, parking may be a problem at the Federation area.

Someplace like Whaley Lake might be a nicer alternative because at least we would have adequate parking despite having to pay for it at the marina.   It is also quite shallow in areas, and we can almost depend on it freezing - as well as being a nice fishery.

Sodom would be my next

Yes. I forgot about whites. Free parking, easy access, and one of the first area lakes to freeze.   I have pulled walleye out of there jigging. Perch and pickerel too. Some one stocked northerens (not DEC) and a couple have been pulled out as well.

I change my vote!!

Good suggestion.

I'd be willing to venture there bout 60 miles or so for me .....plus walleye ...when does that usually lock up? I know the weather is quite different just 10 miles south of me....are gas augers allowed ?  Are there bait shops in that area ?

Hello, i hope the ice conditions are favorable for early meets but, from my experience , the ice usually is too thin and spotty in December for much of the southern ny regions.  I just ordered me an ice Armour life vest  from one of the sponsors here  ;D got the hoodie walleye pullover and two fleece sweatshirts.. I think the vest is the best deal for anyone who enjoys being out on the water ;)

OK....Whites Pond is officially added to the list.  Although I have hard stories about Walleye & Northern Pike  caught there, Ihave only caught dink Perch and Bass.  There is, however.... good parking area, good access, plenty of room for a nice party.  No bait in the area.....bring your own.  Usually one of the first to freeze.

CHECK OUT THE LIST...... CAST YOUR VOTES !!!!!

Love Sylvan, but parking can be difficult. There is another lot across the street just not sure who owns it.
R & P Shot Shop is also only a few miles away and they sell live bait.

Sylvan holds some nice size trout with 3+ lb'ers not uncommon if you put your time in. Also nice pickerel, bass and panfish. It's very deep also which is why the trout can grow so big in there.

I don't personally knoiw m uch about Orange County lakes, but from what I've read here ove the years, most of the guys who fish there go to the lakes on the Seven Lakes Hwy.   Based on past conversations, these lakes are highly unreliable because they are controlled by the local authorities who decide (arbitrarily) when you can fish there and when you cannot.  If we cannot guarantee a lake will be "open", we cannot consider it for our get-together.

Any of you Orange County boys want to chime in here............ we're listening!!
