St. Croix Legend (which one do you own?)
« on: Mar 10, 2011, 04:49 PM »
I have been looking for 2 St. Croix Legend poles LIR24L or UL I haven't made up my mind. I found a LIR17L today that  I thought was too short
for what I usually fish but thought If they knocked some cash off I might get it. They took $10 off. Now next year or in the off season I want
to get another one longer but I'm not sure if I want the Light or the Ultralight. Anyone have an opinion on this?
Thanks
Greg

Go with the 17 this is my go to set up the spring bobber color is the defining peace.
The orange tip is the one I use the most. The short rod is two fold one in a tight shack , two in wind it is small enough to keep the wind from blowing the line you can almost hide it with your coat.JMO
I also own 24 ul ST.Croix and use it for dead stick.

I have 4 -24 UL legends and I love them.I fish gills mostly in less than 20 fow, they are sensitive yet have back bone to set the hook in deeper water. I've caught a 36 inch 10.6 lb pike on two lb test, and a 23 inch 5lb plus smallmouth on it,great rods for gills and crappies and plenty of rod if something big smacks your jig.

I want a a 24" one for sure but I  saw some posts about the UL being to light? Do either one of you have any issues
where you think it is to light? My gut tells me go UL but I don't want to be disappointed either.

I have 4 older 24 inch UL (no reel seat) thin cork handles w graphite wrap over then, they are very nice rods with backbone, they are not wippy little noodle rods,I love the 24 inch length to controll the fish while your fighting them.I also have 2 -28 inch premier in a light action, there nice but not for panfish,I don't like there fat cork handles,I use them jigging for eyes. I finesse fish a lot with 2 lb  and plastics with spring bobber on them or small jigs size 12 -16 gill pills, and they work really nice. Hope this helps.

I have changed to mh rod and put a St Croix spring bobber on it with a fly reel. Use the spring bobber for panneys and with out for jigging raps or the such.

I hope to pick at least 1 more up during the off-season. I have 3 custom built rods Gaffight made in Indiana by a custom
rod builder that the springbobbers have seen better days. I thought about buying 2 extra springs to have mounted on them. Does St Croix sell the tip and grommet that they go in? Or does anyone have the sizes of the eye and grommet
to add to your existing rods you want to convert?

Cabela's sent me a flyer of stuff on sale,I think the sale lasted till March 31. Theres a past post with pic's to shows you how to rig the St.Croix spring to your rod.Your tie a small eye to the top side of your rod and get a solid rubber grommet and drill it out to fit the St.Croix springs. My 4 St.Croix Legends are older and did not come with the spring, but they only cost $20 apiece, from a G.M. in Mich.and I use Bic lighter springs on them.

I know there have been posts about what size eyes and grommets to use. I think someone sells them that is on iceshanty
sells them. I was at a bait shop this week that sells the bobbers with the grommet. I didn't see how much though cause
I was looking for a complete rod.
