There is no such thing as safe ice. There is more than one thread on Iceshanty.com right now about icefisherman falling through the ice, and at least a couple where they did not make it out alive!
Know your surroundings on the ice. Educate yourself, and your friends and family on ice saftey. Here is a link that could save your life.

Thin ice is all around us and if you dont know where it is ,it could be all around you too :-\
