How fast are had augers?
« on: Jan 09, 2014, 01:43 PM »
I have been barrowing my dad's Jiffy Auger so far this year and am looking at getting a hand auger so that if I want to fish another lake I don't have to barrow his auger.  Right now we have about 24 inches of ice or so and I was wondering how long it takes to drill through that with a 6 inch hand auger? Also how much work is it to drill say 5 holes with a hand Auger? I am looking at getting a nils or Lazr any pros and cons to these augers thanks for the help?

It's been a long time since i hand drilled but if your going through 24" with a hand auger you better be in good shape.

It will drill as fast as you turn the handle. Its going to be a workout to drill that many if you are doing them all at once, if not you can probably do one at a time and be fine. Drill one, then fish for a few minutes, and drill another.

a good sharp hand auger 24" of Ice I say 30 seconds you are through. No problem. Like others have said if you drill a dozen in a row you may get tired.

My 6" Nils cuts a half inch of ice for every full turn.  24" of ice equals 48 turns.

With ice that thick, Save your money and buy a used power auger.  Take care of it and it will last you a long time. I can't imagine using a hand auger on ice that thick. It would wear me out.  Steve
