Another ice shanty project
« on: Nov 04, 2007, 09:36 PM »
I've started lurking around these forums waiting for the approaching ice season. Can't wait.  Last year was my first real season ice fishing and it was AWESOME.  I've decided to really get into it this season and start purchasing some supplies.  I wanted either an ice shanty or flasher.  I looked around and realized that I would probably only have enough money for one, but then I came upon the idea to build my own shanty and then earn as much money for the best flasher i can afford.  So, i started working on it about three weeks ago and wanted to share some pictures of the progress I've made so far.  Progress is kinda slow as I'm a senior in high school and have been busy planning and applyin to colleges, it's a pain but it's gotta be done.
this is what i started with, just a couple of sheets of plywood.

here's a friend of mine after we got some of the initial cutting done

here he is cuttin out the window for the door

here's something i'm pretty proud of, i designed this folding little table on the back side of the shanty

here's another view of it

the two supports also fold away

i also drilled small holes along the side where i can hang fishing lures and keep them from getting all tangled up, the lures are salmo, made in my homeland Polska

more pictures soon to come, any input is greatly appreciated

Blue tarp for the skin?  I've see the likes that fold down when they are being transported.  Good Job...

the younger generation sure has it easy these days!  power tools, an ice shanty...  I had to use a dull butter knife and a dirty garbage bag when I was a kid!

i got the frame mounted on the bottom of the floor pieces.  i also got a hold of some nice green tarp and plexiglass which will soon enough become part of the shanty.

What're you talking about???  They walked, uphill, a mile, both ways, carrying their milk in their palm for lunch before building their shanty.
Good job guys and enjoy not freezing yer arse off this winter

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

got some more work done over the weekend. i attached the fllorpieces to the side pieces and reinforced it with some support straps

Hmm... seems like there's something missing...

we had the skis mounted on the side for transporting it but that idea failed miserably and we ended up taking them off. im probably going to make a separate sled for it.

here's one of my finishing touches

and here's probably the nicest finishing touch of all, a brand new LX-5. found it on Reed's last week for $359.99 with free shipping, i just couldn't resist.  The money i saved just about paid for my ice shanty. got it in the mail today.  Man am i PUMPED for this upcoming ice season!

i still have to install some windows.  I was thinking of doing openable windows, but decided on having them fixed and coutting out some ventilation holes.  I'll post some pics once i get that done

Also, does anyone have any ideas for a sled for transporting this shanty.  It would have to be pretty good in deep snow because i do a lot of my icefishing in the UP and come february and march, theres about 2-3 feet of snow. thanks.

you should use plexi glass or  clear vynl and use stick on velcro around all the edges. you can adjust how much it is open with velco not just open or just closed

Yea....for every kid like him out there...there are 50 that have nothing better to do but smoke dope, play games on their Xbox and fail high school. I would gladly let some young kid use my power tools and help them out if their intentions were what his are. KUDOS to that young man!!!!!!....WK
Give your son a fish, and he will eat for a day.....teach your son to fish and eventually he'll end up kicking your @ss every time you fish together!!!

Since I built one just like this, I'm curious?  Why the ridgepole?  Keep it from collapsing if it snows heavy?

WOW wedkarz, very nice. Gave me alot of great ideas.

On another topic, I think you stole my dog! jk. I have twin males that look identical to your dog. I've never seen another dog look so much like my two. What kind are they? My two are chocolate lab (father)/silver weinrimer (mother). If you have any other pics of him/her could you post them? I think I only have one pic here at work but I'll try to get more up when I get home.

haha mr niceguy

my dog is a Bavarian Mountain Hound direct from Poland. it's a she and her name is Nella. it's a bit smaller than your dog ill try to post some pictures soon.  it's my first dog and i really love it. You just become so attached to those little critters!

as for the ridge pole, i was considering it before but now i will probably add one. The windows with velcro is another great idea. Thanks for the input and does anyone have any ideas for a sled to haul this thing with?
