Dandy Pike - Glen Lake produces some whoppers.  That is where the Vermont State Record came from.

Pike Dude , Glen Lake is that by Bomoseen?

You are making me jealous that I don't live in VT anymore,  I wish I was still there.

Great Catch.

Very nice Northern. There are plenty like it but they are always nice to see. Glad you let it go, be careful gaffing fish that you do not intend to keep. Keep hitting it hard.

gaffing fish that you do not intend to keep. why would you gaff it or decide to if you were going to release the fish??

That was my question? You gaffed it then released it? And you stuck your hand down its motuh and threw it on the ice? You might as well have kept him.

If he did use a gaff?? A well placed lift with the appropriate gaff would do no more damage than a hook.  ;)2

Guys it was my first huge northern ok... it did not harm the fish a bit.It was properly gaffed and properly released. what would you do if you had your mind set on landing that kind of a monster. Most people would have kept it, i could have easily done the same but i thought otherwise. I knew that that fish can easily some day exceed 30lb so i released it for a future angler to catch. Perhaps a new state record. Everyone else said how pleased they were to here that fish was released. So, please do not slam me for gaffing a once in a life time fish. Im sure other people will back me up on that. Thanks

All you armchair quarterbacks kill me...."you should of done this, you shouldn't of done that". I'd like to see how most of you would react with a fish like that on your line through a 6" hole.  ::) Give the kid a break, at least he had the presence of mind to release it (unlike in a lot of dead pike on ice pics I see around here).

Great fish Pike Dude. WTG

Pike Dude- Don't listen to anyone questioning your tactics with that fish.  You did everything right because you have the pictures to prove it.  You set up in the right spot, used the right bait, fought the fish correctly, and if she swam away, handled it correctly, gaffing and all.  If everyone did it like that we'd have alot more 20's around.  WTG!

beauty of a fish,, that is great you let her go.. I have a question about the gaffing of a fish   that seems to me like the fish would be badly hurt..I never used one  I would think gaffing a fish you would have to keep it..
hoe do you do this without hurting the fish.. like where do most people put the gaff
in the fish if you are going to release it.  thanks for the pics

If you would have read above another fish pic that i posted on this website then you could have read the play by play. The gaff hook snapped and i grabbed its mouth with my hand. And yes i did get all bloody. In the pic w/ the tip-up in the backround u can see the blood on the ice.
thanks

Pike Dude,

Great fish!

As far as the gaffing goes, obviously you would not have released it if you felt it was injured at all or too badly.

The fish looks healthy as heck in the photo, and someone will appreciate your conservation and compassion one day.  Hopefully, they too will release it.

Excellent job!
