looking for some baitcaster recommendations for a 48" M/H laker rod I just build. budget is 75-150 CAD.

I would go with a Curado K.

I'm a Shimano fanboy so a Shimano SLX will do. The one I was looking at is the SLX MGL 70 model with the lighter weight spool which will help out a lot with just vertical dropping of a lure.

I use a Garcia Pro Max on a Jason Mitchell Mackinaw ice rod. It does double duty during open water on a Ugly Stik Elite rod.

I have tried a few, the Abu 5501C3 is my go to reel because of the syncronized levelwind. Never ever an issue with that reel. Its a little top heavy but a 48" rod may be different feel than the 36" genz rod I have, If you are looking for sub compact reel, the Daiwa CG80 is pretty nice as well, I use both all season.

For some or maybe most reels there is a need to clean out the excess grease and use lower viscosity grease. For baitcasting, the spool bearings, using a lower viscosity oil for the ball bearings will give you better results. There is also an old method where people performance tune their baitcasting reels by replacing stock ball bearings with higher speed bearings like ABEC 7 quality or better. It will allow for a smoother drop rate if anything else.

old abu 2500 has worked for me the last 30yr. I bet you can get one cheap on line.

Never had an issue, but I fish Lakers mainly in a Fish Trap jigging while watching tip-ups. Mr. Heater keeps everything toasty so no issues with braid line also.

I have several old Ryobi V-MAG 3's that are perfect for this application. You can find them used on eBay!! It's a great little real and can handle some good sized fish!! Mine are well over 30 years old and still going!!!! :flex: :thumbsup:

Abu 4600c4 if fishing outside.
Low profile (bass) reels have a tiny levelwind guide that ices up immediately.

I would look into a smaller non levelwind baitcaster.seems like the levelwind would freeze up in cold temps.my baitcasters do sometimes fishing in real cold temps fishing for late fall/winter steelhead.water drips off the line guide and freezes up on the levelwind.probably not a problem in a heated shanty tho.

But without the levelwind line guide the line is just gonna bunch up in one spot and errrrrrrrhhh...LOL. I hate having to go back to the old manual line winding control after getting a baitcaster with a levelwind line guide. ;D

Cool rund the same reel on my St. Croix bait casting ice Rod.

I use non levelwind penns still in the spring for catfishing.less stuff to break and get longer casting distances.its just second nature to put my thumb on the spool and guide the line on by moving it left and right.now the knucklebusters of days gone by suck.the days when the handle spun while casting and no anti reverse.

It seems pretty split on preference online I like the weight of the Cardiff over the abu. But that is the only thing that stands out to me.
Opinions on these two?

If you prefer more of the traditional round baitcasting reels. The Cardiff has a recessed reel foot, so it will sit a little lower on the rod. That will make for palming hold a little more comfortable over that of the Abu C4.
By weight of the reel, I think you're referring to the smaller Cardiff. The larger one 400 sized one is actually heavier than the Abu C4. The 400 size has a nondisengaging levelwind, so the line winder guide will move with the spool even on free spooling and while fish are pulling line out on the drag.
