Semi thru the ice?
« on: Mar 02, 2021, 09:47 PM »
Some news outlet from MN, (YouTube), shows a semi trailer breaking thru.
Idk if this was on the "ice road" ?
Had a load of rocks, on a flat bed.

I'm guessing a load of rip rap to an area not accessible in summer months.

All that ice road stuff is an alien concept to this Massachusetts guy. I've been ice fishing for 40 years and I've never driven a vehicle on the ice.
I imagine the bottom of those big lakes must be littered with vehicles.
I gotta think driving a semi with a load of rocks on the ice must be a nerve wracking job.

I do it every year Mike despite being from CT.  To me it's just the same as walking on ice just a different scale.  All the same rules and judgement calls apply plus maybe a few extra considerations for driving on.  Here's a pic from last week.  Looking north on Champlain at Canada.

well this turned into quite the thread  ;D i'm pretty sure there's ice roads all over LOW, i know for a fact there is on the canadian side.  just a ways up north from here many places are more accessible in the winter due to ice roads than in the summer when fly in is the only option.  just a way of life and chit happens.

as for ice road truckers that is all hype and fluff.  my old man did it in the 70s 80s, sunk a cat in the beaufort sea down 40ft.  they yanked it out and got on with the job.  probably got as worked up as those tv goofs do over getting stuck in a snow drift.

also just a few years back guys were driving across one of the biggest local lakes around here on may long weekend.  wouldn't recommend it but to each their own.

Out of curiosity, anyone know the ice thickness where the truck went in? It doesn't look like 12" in the video, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm wondering if the truck made it to that point on a little over a foot? I'd be surprised as that truck weighs 25-30 tons, or more, loaded with stone.

Ice roads pretty common to isolated areas only accessible by boat during open water. There is an ice road from Bayfield WI to La Pointe on Madeline Island that is well marked and maintained. Not uncommon to see semis of building supplies driven over in the winter. Even if the ferry line could accommodate, the cost would be astronomical. And yep, once in a while one slips under...

When your ice fishing and a snowmobile goes by you out on a lake, the water bounces in your hole.  Can't imagine how the water must move when a Semi drives by.

A few times over the years I've seen a wave pushed under the ice ahead of me when on my atv on glare ice of 5-6". I remember the Ice Road Truckers on TV having a sped limit of around 15 to minimize this phenomenon, which obviously can fracture the ice in front of you. When I see it I'm thinking slow down bonehead.
