Windlass Tip-Up Tips?
« on: Nov 26, 2012, 03:42 PM »
I got one for $7. I like the idea of how it works. Besides "Don't Buy It". Does anyone have any good things to say about them?
I'm planning on using braided Iceline. Suffix 832 6lb and a leader of Flourocarbon 12-24 inches and jigs.
Set it and forget it.

How do you rig it?

Thanks.

I used one for the first time on Saturday. I wasn't real impressed. I didn't get much wind action as it was cold and the hole kept freezing up. Maybe they would work better in warmer weather? It was about -20C with a wind so was frezing up pretty quick.

They are fantastic, and have caught our three biggest pike and nearly a 35 pound lake trout. They set off on a light bite really well and feed very smooth. Some days they will outproduce a stationary tip up for sure. To keep them working, you just need vinyl coated ice line, and hole covers with tubing, then they work in even -20 conditions.

I just purchased a couple of these and I am new to the entire tipup scene.   I am a pan fisherman but trying to broaden my horizen.   Is there a video out on these for use, because I am just trying to figure out how these will jig and setup properly.

Like posted before not for really cold weather. But when it is warm enough for them they are the first ones out for me! When it is too cold then the Beaver Dams come out. I rig mine with braided tip up line then heavy fluoro and red treble hook and minnow or hot dog rig ;D for pike. For Walleye 6 pound leader and jig or small treble.
Tight lines and safe fishing.

I always have a pair of these in the tippy box. Since I target primarily pike, they most often provide a little action to an otherwise very dead bait. Certainly there are other applications. There is a bit of a learning curve regarding how to set it to get the action you want but it's worth it.

I'll second the use of vinyl coated spool line...... much easier to handle and resists freezing to itself. You can match leader material and length to your species. As far as use in the cold, I use a square of old tire inner tube, it is lightweight, doesn't take up much space and will keep holes open on a sunny day sometime down to +10 F. Colder than that it can be a labor intensive affair to keep 'em working. $7 is a smokin' deal, I'd even grab a coupla spares at that price.  ;D

I believe it was marked wrong. $7 at the beginning of the season? It was the last one so I don't know.

Thanks for the tips

Hot dog rig for pike?  I have heard of that several times, but never from anyone who actually uses them.

How about a little primer?  Perhaps start a new thread?

they are more ment for early or late ice on warm days. also  i have been pleased with my artic warrior tip ups thus far can just pick them up and jig em if needed and reset if need be.

i use a round stryofoam block with mine and it will prevent freeze ups to -15C. the warmth from the lake and the black stryofoam will keep the hole from freezing.

I've got hole covers without the tube. What could be used for a tube?
