After reading this it made me go back through the hundreds of Poems I have written to find this one to share with you...

Thank You

Hours spent away from home
Long tired nights
Working his fingers to the bone
All for the family
No thoughts of his needs
The only time I saw him smile
Was while he was taking me fishing

No words did we speak
For none needed to be said
In the quiet hours of the morning
I could feel the love from my Dad
With each cast and each catch
Within each smile I could see
Fishing along side my father
Are some of my most treasured memories

He taught me much out on the lake
To never give up
For this was the biggest mistake
Persevere through the current
As it moves you along
Understanding life;
In the open waters it was taught

Fear not what you have yet to do
Your integrity, strength of character
Will carry you through
Never turn away for fear you may not succeed
Lessons taught in the open waters
These lessons are what shaped me.

Thank You Dad!!

i didn't get to fish alone with my dad often, having 5 brothers. he and my mom showed me how to fish. they also taught me about the outdoors. i in turn have taught other people how to fish, and will teach my daughter. and someday my grandkids. thanks for teaching me dad.(and mom)

Thanks for making me take a moment to reflect.

My dad took me fishing all the time when I was a kid. He didn't really know how to fish - yeah we got lucky now and then, but it was "father and son time" together. I obsessed about fishing until my late teen years. Then I went off to college, partied and spent time with girls... then one day my dad was sick. I was 23 when he died. I was 23 when I began to fish again. I developed a friendship with a buddy who had returned from college around the same time my dad passed. We began to fish and hunt together. This is my closest friend almost 20 years later. I was best-man at his wedding... he held my kids when they were babies... we are as tight as family. Somehow in trying to get closer to what my father and I had shared, I ended up with one of the best friends a guy could have. I still miss my dad and I always imagine that he is looking down when I am catching fish like we used to dream about!

My son is finally getting to that age - he caught a 33 inch pike last summer and makes me show the picture to everyone we meet! My daughter sat with me last year when I took a deer during archery season. These are the memories that never go away.

Best Wishes!

Its those memories that you will cherish forever...  Great story, He sounds like a great friend and you sound like a wonderful father as well

Gonephishin, you sound like a real nice kid.Brought up old school if ya know what i mean. You got me thinking about my dad,he left us 13 years ago(lung cancer)sure do miss him. After reading what you wrote about your dad i know exactly what i would say to mine, wish he was here, for those of you who still have your dads i think it's time to give them a call, time is to short to wait any longer. Cherish every moment you can spend with them, you brought tears to my eyes, never forget the good times,i have to go now.Dad i hope you know that i love and miss you so much.

I too love my father, and still am able to fish and hunt with him.  Although we dont have much luck deer hunting we have fun.  We get most of the deer from the nice police officer that calls my dad and says "i have another one"  They taste good.  The old mans freezer is full of packages marked "RK".  As for fishing we go as often as we can.  He has taught me well, I am fortunate enough to be able to have my son to start teaching, and he too is learning from Grandpa, that is something to cherish.

Dads are something special.
