Ice On Loon
« on: Nov 22, 2006, 05:41 PM »
This morning when I was on my way to work I noticed a thin skim of ice covering the south inlet of loon.  ;D  It went a few feet into the lake as well!  ;D  21* this morning!

Most of it was still there this afternoon on my way home too.   ;D

On the way BACK from hunting this morning, there was ice on a pond up the road from my house here in Chenango County.   ;D That was around noon.  Not sure what it looks like now, but I'm sure that if it melted it'll be back in the morning.  I can't wait!  ;D Seeing as I already killed a deer, I won't feel too bad when I head to the north country for early ice.  ;)

The ice seems late on Loon this year. Isn't it usually covered in August? LOL. Great lake, hope it does freezes soon. It is usually the first lake of the season for everyone to get their first dose of ice.

Here in northern Indiana it's 8 P.M and it's still 62 degrees. But it's supposed to start dropping tomorrow with potentially more than 6 inches of snow. Come on ice!

I was just wondering--Does Loon Lake have trout and salmon in it? I am crawling outta my skin to get on some hard water? Yesterday, I was sitting in my shanty, in the basement, just dreamin and organizing my ice gear. Had a smile from ear to ear. My wife thinks I am crazy  :cookoo:  :cookoo:

Definitely no salmon. There might be a few trout.
It is mostly known for perch and pickerel through the ice.
KW can give a better description. I've only been there a few times.

I think your wife may be right, man!   ;D
If it's that bad just go fishing.
I know it's not the same, but it helps me through this period of waiting.

Any virtual reality fishing games out there? If not it could be a niche market to pursue for us addicts that can't stand the down time.  ;)

I still say my idea I proposed last year to build a massive stadium size building with ice and water beneath stocked with fish would be inviting for people like skunked by walleye. I suppose if it was floating look alike ice made from durable fiberglass complete with holes it would be less costly then trying to super freeze the place! The sky would be the limit as far as realizm if the money was there. Put them up near Bass Pro Shops or something like that. Offer some real bonus trophy fish to make it interesting.

I already grow out trophy fish of several species, so that part would not be that difficult to have them and periodically plant them like a fishout pond.

Japan has indoor skiing you know complete with a mountain. Why not?

Rochester weather is calling for temps in the mid teens for a couple of days. This usually means it will be in the low teens to single numbers at Loon. Soon very soon.

Shouldn't take long at all, next week If the temps stay around what they are! Also, don't forget there are a few musky in there, and there is also nice pike!

Be patient fellas, the ice is coming to Loon. The warm weather chased it off last week, but she is primed for a good lock up.  Yesterday the south inlet was capped over again.  As I mentioned a week or so ago there was even Some ice starting to form out in the main lake, but that was then.  I'll keep an eye out and let you know as soon as I see anybody on the ice.

I've fished this lake year round for almost 30 years and have never caught any trout, or pike.  Same goes for walleye.  The DEC claims that they are there (walleye)  but I've tried to find them and had no luck. You'll mostly find perch, gill's, and pickrel, a few Bass, and some nice crappies.  I once watched a guy pull a tiger musky up through the ice as long as your leg though.  But only one in thirty years.
