My only "reliable" method has been to run tip ups shallow (3-6ft) after dark with small shiners....

Trouble is, I can only do that on weekends...

I stumble across a random Waldo in the daytime now and then, but 90% of my winter Wallace's come well after dark.

Reflective flags and a spotlight help...  But then again, so does being able to see tip ups out the bedroom window.

Would like to get more jigging, but mine usually come on tipups; always say I will jig more, will try to leave the tipups homwe on the colder days this year.

The guys that fish Oneida seem to do well jigging them up.

My plan for this year is to head out a few hours before dusk and drill all my jigging holes. Then play with panfish, or try for 'eyes deeper until it's time to  sneak in and start jigging. I think keeping the noise and light to a minimum helps a lot from the research I've done. When I have bait I'll have a deadstick going too.

here we go!
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

How so, OlCrawdad?  I am about 30ft from my flags.  And far, far closer to my baits then anyone in a shanty on the same lake.

I've been down this road several times (and spent eight years as a National Park Ranger), it's all legit and plenty legal.

You think my tipups aren't attended simply because I am looking at them through actual windows instead of plastic?

Sorry for any potential highjack, OP.  A PM will suffice regarding someone's legal concerns.  As for waldos, I still say the most reliable method is late night/pre-dawn tip ups with small baits, just off the shoreline.  Around 6ft (sometimes less!) seems best in my experience.

I don't use tip ups at all so when we go walleye fishing I always have at least a couple spoons. Then I always rig 2 swim baits and depending on where we go a slip rig if there's current is killer! Flo orange, blue and white or green for the spoons, rainbow trout and fire tiger for the jiggin raps, perch color for the chubby(love the chubby), i always tip them with either a waxi or a minnow head(or other parts). These have worked any where we have gone to catch them, the time of day has less to do with it than moon kphase as far as i'm concerened. We've crushed them at noon time before, but it takes work and time to get it down. ;) Good luck..

What I find important is the cadence in which you jig.
Work is for people that don't know how to fish!

I got a ticket once in Oneonta because I was sitting in my truck watching my tip-ups when a rain shower hit.  I was 10 feet from the ice.  Could be the CO was overzealous, but he told me I had to be on the ice or the shore.  Maybe I should have fought the ticket!

I prefer jigging them up dawn to 8 AM and then dusk into dark. If you have them or can locate them try a nils master #2 or 3. Same profile as a jiggin rapala but its bulkier- think they can see it from a farther distance. Watch your vex or marcum to see how they respond to varouius jigging action.

Last year I caught 90 keepers (did not keep all 90 mind you)  can only keep 3 a day but I keep a log of all my trips out weather, time of activity, etc, anyway out of the 90 keepers , 75 came off jigging .

Tip ups and jigging. Don't limit yourself, take advantage of all opportunity. Daylight and dark, hour before, hour after, each.

You dont count!  ;)

How many of those 75 were over 8lbs?

What do you mean I don't count ???

Actually only 2 of the 75 were over 8 lbs.  (1) 10 lb 3 oz  (1) 8lb 6oz
Lots and lots of 6 and 7 lbers and lots  of 18 inches.

That's awesome ... i have never caught a Waldo through the ice , but going to give it a try (i'm a jigger only) with a Vex. Care to share some more of the info you logged ?  And NO i do not want to know location  ::)           Day/night , type of lures , tipped with bait , depth range ?

I have a place to try once it freezes, probably going to try after work in the dark (never ice fished at night before either) ... so any tips would be cool.

Thanks !

BB, just grab a jiggin rap or a spoon. Tip it with a minnow head and start beatin the bottom. Let it fall to the bottom, lift, hold for 5 seconds or so and jig it up, let it fall so on and so forth. the hold is when you'll get hit most likely, I use this time and time again and it works well. Work a steep slope or something on the bottom you can find with you're vex, if there around you'll see them on you're screen and you can go from there.

I think the best way to catch eyes is to not get hung up on a single meathod. Been out some days and they will slam a jig n minnow. same spot a week later they wont hit anything but a glow red jig tipped with a spike.. 3 days later later they want a shiny silver spoon. Change it up and you will catch more fish.

Just like jumbo perch or crappie keep moving to stay catching fish.  Everyday is different someday its live bait on a big spoon while others its a finesse bite on small jigs with plastics. Keep trying different techniques there is no "golden" setup that will work day in and day out.
