What happened to Finn Bore?
« on: Dec 05, 2022, 08:03 AM »
I haven't been ice fishing for the past 12+ years or so and during that time I gave away my hand augers. I originally had a Nils which worked fine, but liked my Finn Bore better because of the ease of replacing blades. Getting back into things, an hour or 2 of googling and searching the forum here - I can't find the Finn-Bore anywhere. Does someone else sell these under a different name now, or if they're gone - what's the closest thing? I don't mind getting a Nils again either, was just hoping to avoid having to send the head in for sharpening.

I still see them for sale in Canada under Rapala Finbore,  looks like they may just be out of stock in the US at the Fishin Hole.

Does anyone have experience with the Nero from HT? Offset handles and can come with a drill adapter.

I've got both 6" and 8" mini neros... Great bang for your buck hand auger, cut very well manually with the offset handles. The extra handle they give you to adapt to a drill is pretty useless but there's plenty of better adapters available out there from other places. The 6" works great under a drill but the 8" tends to grab at break through.

WOW, glad it works for you, but I find the offset auger handle much better... Strength of both arms as opposed to one.

It's now Mora Fin-Bore. Try starting your search with Mora. I held on to my old 6 in Fin-Bore when I went electric. Too good an auger to part with. Replacement blades are Mora too. Good luck with your search.

Agree…light weight, and cuts ice like butter! Replacement blades are more than reasonable too.

X3…I have my Nero on a plate/rigid set up.  If I’m walking out where there’s a chance of a Pike or Laker that’s what I take.  Perfect  “tweener”  between 6” Nils/Plate and 8” Nils/Tanaka.

I think Fin bore's only in Canada since a while, sold here as Fin Bore 3. I have both 6 and 8 inch versions.I find the 8 bogs down too much if the ice is more than about 16 inches or so, but by that time, I'm using my Ion G2.

Nils can’t be be beat in my opinion.. I still have a finbore but still prefer nils for easier and faster cutting.

As I have posted before;
I have cut holes using a Nils and a Fin-Bore side by side and the Fin-Bore cuts just as easily/fast, but the Fin-Bore is less expensive to buy, less expensive to maintain, and arguably less delicate... It is cheaper to get blades, to sharpen the blades, and easy to carry spares. The most important aspect of both the Nils and the Fin-bore is the offset handles, which let you use both arms' strength and not just one.

I've posted some Fin Bore to Nils comparisons on here in the past as well.

 While the Nils cuts a lot smoother through think ice, the blades are way to sensitive to any debris, making the auger unreliable. I had the 8 inch version with a spare cutter head, and every twig, spec of sand or frozen weeds in the ice would send it to be resharpened, as I could never figure out how to do it properly on my own. Basically went from hero to zero in a jiffy (pun intended). Sold it a couple years ago.

I carry spare Fin Bore and Ion blades in my tackle box, as well small wrench and sharpener, in case of issues. Much cheaper and quicker to fix on the fly.

Fishingworld will ship to the US, so I got one there and I also got a 6" Nero - I'll see what I like better, and let's face it - you can never have too much icefishing stuff ;D.
