Day 1 of 18' wheelhouse
« on: Dec 09, 2020, 01:34 PM »
Finally after 2 months of waiting on flooring to come in, I can finally start building.
I'm building on an 8x18+4'v Miltona tandem axel frame.

1.125 T&G sheath flooring.
2x3 walls.
Pro rib steel siding.
Empire Direct vent furnace
Spray foam floor to ceiling
12v for all lights but I will add 110 outlets
I haven't decided on rubber or steel roofing yet

Good luck with your build.  Take lots of pics so we can live vicariously.  Is the frame steel or aluminum?  Any idea of the weight of the bare frame?

Just a short update, flooring is cut, sleepers are all laid, and the corners have gone up.

I used 1-1/8" tongue and groove sheathing, I probably could have gotten 3/4" t&g green treat but I painted both faces and I will paint the ends.

That should be stout.

Is that shack always at road height AA?

Today's update is i framed in doors and windows, started on the wheel wells. The plan as it stands is to do rafters and finish the wheel wells tomorrow. Maybe even tyvek.

Yes, where I fish we have a fair amount of snow along with freezing and thawing.  We don't see a lot of drop axles as we can get a deep slush layer on top of the ice which then freezes.  I have seen many skid houses get frozen in so bad that you couldn't open the door.

I don't care for spending half my day chipping out the ice shanty so I block my wheelhouse up and use a sleeve for jig hole to keep the drafts out.

Began siding today, got most of the easy pieces up. I was able to fit the siding around windows that were set over a seam but I have to figure out how to fit the siding around  windows centered in a sheet of siding. I'm really happy with this for siding and now plan to use it for the roof.

Here's A little better photo, I got the 2nd row of steel put up, and cut the 3rd as well, I laid two layers of 15# synthetic felt. The two days of warm temperatures i was capitalizing on are currently being followed by snow so I got it tarped and will finish the siding and get on the roof shortly.

The felt hasn't been laid in this photo but this is how the siding looks

Overdue update that hopefully a few of you wanted, progress over the summer was slow. I finished the roof and trim, recently I have tackled the wiring. You can see the main overheads lit up as temporary work lights in their permanent position. Spent the day caulking seam windows and framing. I'm hoping to have the insulation up this week and the paneling soon to follow.

This is what it looks like immediately before insulation. We're still only walking out bit we will be out on the ice this year.

I combed through the wiring, finalized everything. The exterior is complete and the interior is ready for insulation. I was able to reassemble the cable and wheel setup.

Today and yesterday I put up the insulation, tomorrow I'm picking up the interior paneling, then all that's left before  ice is bunk and furnace!

Yesterday and today I put up the pine paneling in the interior, it was impressive how much warmer the insulation made it, but the pine paneling makes it feel like it holds the heat now, I had my big buddy on low (4k btu) and that kept it between  60F and 70F it was 6F outside. Really considering downsizing to a smaller 15K furnace rather than the 25K I had my eye on.

I finished the walls, and ceiling with clear matte polyurethane to prevent any stains. I started to install all the wiring, the only wiring left now are the fuse panel, breaker box and radio speakers
