I’ve been using the little buddy this season to cut down the amount of propane I usually go through. So far it’s done a nice job heating my 2-person flip over.

I use a 1 gallon metal bucket with a fuel canister in it the type you use to keep deli food warm. One canister will keep my pop up warm enough to throw my coat off and warm my lunch     2 canisters and you can cook on it  just cover the bucket with some heavy wire screen   very simple

I actually lost my old black cat on Oneida today. If anyone comes across it let me know! I tried retracing my tracks tonight but my tracks got snowed in.

I just ordered the flame king version of it. Looks like the same thing.

The thing I like about the black cat is you can run it on low and not burn much propane. Having a thermal cover I don’t normally need much heat. I just want enough to keep my holes thawed and not wear gloves.

As long as this is a heater thread - I have a great heater hack that can be used as a cooking/warming surface...low cost too.

If you have a Mr Heater little buddy heater...

...go to a hardware store and buy a paint screen - the type you hang inside a bucket to roll off excess paint from a roller.

They come in 2 sizes - I bought the smaller size.

Back to the Mr. Heater...when the top handle is folded down in storage position - the paint screen clips snugly on the handle and makes a great surface exactly above the heat.   Now place a dollar store (tin plate - or something similar) on the horizontal paint screen.

You can make hot dogs or sausage...heck...we warmed leftover pizza on it!

Be careful - it gets hot fast!  But if you like grilling on the ice but don't want to bring the grill - this might work for you.

My observation - I wouldn't cook/warm anything greasy or anything that might spill or spit...and keep it light.  You cannot put a frying pan on it or flip hamburgers...but a pack of hotdogs in a tin with some water (or beer) and you can eat tube steaks all day long!

Just an idea...enjoy...

sterno cans will work but do not put out much heat and don't last very long.  These are liquid fuel with a fibre type whick   lasts about 6-8 hrs      same Idea though

Cooked Mac n cheese and heated some ribs on my buddy heater this weekend. A warm meal or snack on the ice is nice. Delicious!

I dont know much about portable kerosene heaters I will admit ..but the smell of the fuel and fumes emitted would be a hard pass.

This is my heater, the furnace pipe cover is optional, it makes a good cover to create a small oven, really heats up your sandwich.

Just a piece of tin to reflect the heat up and not melt the ice.
I can also latch it up and direct the heat up…

I've got the yellow Mr Heater version. 10 or 15 years ago Lowes had an excess of them and dumped them for 24.99 or 29.99, I can't remember. It has been a work horse and useful for many instances beyond icefishing. I have definitely got to add a cook rack this year.
