Riding mower on the ice
« on: Feb 14, 2021, 12:03 PM »
I have seen riding mowers (yard tractor style) with plow blades and tire chains.  I have never seen one used on the ice.  Is there a reason that they are not used on the ice?  I understand that a 4 wheel drive ATV would be better, but if I already have the mower, why not use it?

Really hard to drive one of those on the ice when the snow and slush are over a foot deep.

Most states outlaw operating a riding mower while intoxicated. Not sure if that applies on the ice.

I can see that it wouldn't be ideal.  I've been ice fishing for a bit over 15 years now and I've never seen a mower on the ice.  I don't often see snow mobiles on the ice for that matter, at least not near as often as 4 wheelers.  I don't really know why.

I still can't see that mower going through two foot of snow!  My 4x4 quad, with cold kutter studs in the tires, can.  But it has a lot more ground clearance then that mower.  More then 2 foot and I don't want to be out on my quad, let alone a mower.

Wouldn't fit my application either, snowmobile most of the time (months), 4-wheeler\Ranger the other couple of days, if you don't live in the snowbelt it would probably be a different story.

Depends on the lakes ya hit, though........many of ours here are actually plowed for miles by resorts that make their own "ice highways". My buddy owns a big resort on URL; and he has 4 trucks that plow for days on end.
That's where I go and drive....too old be be battling all that snow. The easier the better, more energy to fish!

They do the same for snowmobiles and wheelers and even automobiles but it still don't stop 'em, do it?

Ayup. Lots of those lakes turn into zoo's by noon. That's a lot of the metro area lakes I hit. (I have to drive 90 or more miles to one, as no lakes here in SE Minnesota...just the river) 20 yrs ago wasn't like that at all, but now it's unreal. I don't like trying to fish that with all the hootin' and hollerin', music playing, football ice games going on, etc. Hate it. I want to get away to peace and quiet.

Try municipal ponds, if any are around. I do that a lot, and most of them get very little ice fishing pressure. The fishing usually includes a lot of dinks, but once in a while a big tugboat will surprise you.

Well, I haveta have a lake I can drive out on.....ya can't do that around here. They won't even allow ATV's on area ponds/reservoirs, of which there are about 3 in this area. Land of streams down here. Great for trout fisherman. Unable to walk any distance anymore 'cuz of spinal and leg issues, so haveta drive and drop.

This is how you get it done.....Chaumont Bay, Lake Ontario....no problems just blew the snow away had myself on the tractor and was towing 2 shanty’s behind with 2 people riding on them. Coolest thing ever, snow was blowing crazy, looked like a freight train blower.

There once was video of it, but can’t seem to find it. It was the talk of the bay.

I'm waiting for Alvin Straight to chip in on this.  :P If anyone knows about lawn tractors as alternate transportation he does!
