General Ice Fishing Chit Chat / Helix 9 portable bag
« Last post by Pudsky on Oct 15, 2021, 09:34 PM »
Over the summer I purchased a Humminbird shuttle for the 8/9/10 and a 19ah Amped Outdoors Lithium battery.  I am mostly ready to go for the winter season.  After the dock was pulled and little fishing boat removed, I removed my Helix9 and dropped it off at Canvas Craft in Otsego, MN to have them make me a canvas case for my Helix9 shuttle.  I do also have a Humminbird Ice Helix5 set up, and that bag does not fit the Helix9.  I told them what I would like and showed them a couple pictures and am letting them create whatever they think will fit and work the best.  I am looking forward to what they come up with.

I was just going to keep that setup in a milk crate, because it fit perfect, but that does not offer much protection to blowing snow and precip, while traveling on the sled.  I do mostly walk when ice fishing, and pull my sled.  I set-up a hub, crack a beer and pretty much stay there for the day.  Occasionally I will move around, but usually leave the hub in one spot, and walk from there.

I am looking forward to what they come up with!  I am surprised Humminbird does not have a little bigger bag for the 8/9/10.

Does anyone else have a custom ice setup for the Helix 8/9/10?  lets see them

I'll second the, pike will eat anything. I've had plenty come up and chop down on my cameras. Eyoyo and Aqua vu.
I'm looking to pick out a dedicated rod for pike this year. Probably in the heavy category. I got the new Nasci 2500 all spooled up and waiting.

Good evening everyone

All I saw for my time in the tree was 1 fat porcupine. The wind never let up and it's supposed to be windy again tomorrow.

Hope you all have a good evening.

Time to put another log on the fire.

I wonít mess around with my pike set ups. Itís a 50# braid and an 80-100# mono leader. Iím not using small baits though. Itís essentially a muskie set up on a jig pole and Iíll jig with Bondy baits, fuzzy duzzits, etc. You can get away with this because pike of any size donít tend to be finicky at all so line size doesnít really matter much. I refer to pike as ďwater goatsĒ because they will eat anything. Hang a dang hubcap off of a 58 Buick on your line and theyíll attack it.

Pike are impulsive and size doesnít matter as much as it does with other species. Many have experienced a 16 inch pike taking down a foot long dead bait. So for that reason Iíll go BIG with my baits and use muskie stuff which means that I want to make darn sure that my line, leader, and components are such where Iíll have confidence in it not failing. When you are using baits in the $30 and up range you want to use line that will hold up in order to protect your investment.

I always thought what few stories there were in the guie. All were the same exact script only the names changed to protect the paid for " opinion ".

See if the rest of you read it the same way I do. The " writer " will assume the identity of HERO. Here we go. HERO meets up with his usual gang of buds for some hot ice action. But unfortunately the fish are tight lipped for one reason or another. This part at least has some variety. HERO is having bad luck just like the rest of his crew.

Then HERO remembers he has some new this year lure. No one else in the crew has it. The HERO was the only farsighted person to actually purchase this new " killer lure ". Even though millions was spent advertising the thing.

As our HERO pulls it from his tackle storage. It is suspect or even laughed at by the rest of the crew. But their lack of confidence is soon replaced by astonishment. The HERO starts slamming the fish just like years past. Guess the fish aren't feeding at all until they see something NEW. Luckily the HERO was far sighted enough to buy several of these wonder lures.  HERO passes out some to his cohorts. The fish so eagerly attack the thing. They all have to turn their back to their holes so the fish quit leaping on the ice to get at the thing. ( Slightly exaggerating here ). So everyone goes home happy with buckets of fish.

But yeah I will probably buy one too LOL

Growing up in Ohio our little " Band of Brothers " always dreamed of owning and operating our own bait shop. About 10 years after all of us  completed our military tours of duty. Our luck ran out as our dream became a reality. After struggling to keep afloat for about 8 years. We finally realized this was no way to enjoy life.

Selling live bait seems easy. But you soon find out your money goes out of your hands in gysers and comes back in like little spurts from a dried up well. Long hours and very little monetarial reward makes long days seem like an eternity. No matter how early we opened and /or how late we closed. Customers would complain about us always being closed when needed most. Depite being open 17 hours out of a 24 hour day.

It was not all bad we need meet some great people.  But all us lost money over that period of time. Despite all our services to the public. Like repairing rods and reels , fixing Coleman lanterns , light gunsmith work etc etc etc.

Short of someone maintaining an illegal drug habit. I can't think of a faster way to get rid of money. Our favorite joke was when a customer decided he was going to open a bait shop like ours. They thought since the parking lot was full a lot of the time. That we were busy getting rich. Those that did actually try to do it. Went out in less than  two years. Most did not last one full season.

Just one sad little story on how money goes up in smoke. Prior to the Memorial Day weekend we loaded up on live bait. This 3-day weekend was our biggest money producer. 1500.00 of live bait mostly minnows and night crawlers. Was delivered that Thursday afternoon. We opened up to abnoxious odor 6 am friday morning. All the bait had died. Seems shortly after we closed our neighborhood where the shop was lost power. It was back on when we opened up. Never knew about the power outage till a local guy came in and told us.

So if you think  you will be more clever on operating and will be successful. Not to worry we thought we had all the answers too.  :P
