Long Lake - Traverse City
« on: Jan 01, 2015, 11:28 AM »
Fished Long Lake this morning, Thursday January 1st

6" of clear ice with some snow cover, it's slippery on the ice and on the snow.

Caught  two 12"s, one 14", and one 17". Lost two and missed one.

Very windy, lifted the shanty a few times, also very cold which is great.

Fished in front of Long lake Grocery off Taylor Park in about  20 FOW.

Used Blues on the dead stick and the jigging spoon.

Good Luck All

Hi, never fished for walleye through the ice.  What do you mean by using blues on the dead stick?  I want to try for walleyes over here on Muskegon Lake once it freezes up.  I appreciate any info and tips!!

A dead stick is just a pole you set up and watch while you jig.

Some people just set a dead stick and watch the tip, I use a slip bobber so the pole doesn't get pulled down in the hole.
I don't always pay attention like I should. :)

I set it so the blue minnow is about 6" to 18" off bottom. Some people prefer Grey minnows but I usually use blues on my dead sticks.

Hope That helps.

Good Luck On Muskegon Lake

Fished Long Lake tonight, Saturday January 10th

7" of clear ice, but there is 2" to 5" of slush covering that ice in some areas.

We have been doing OK, a few keepers here and there, mixed in with the undersized ones, but not tonight.

We have been getting a lot of action at about 5:30 and again at about 6:30, tonight almost everyone was gone by 6:30

A couple groups were setting up as I was leaving around 7:30, Hopefully they did better.

I ended up with two small walleye and missed three.

Good Luck All

Fished long Lake tonight, Saturday March 7th

About 12" of clear ice, 4" of white ice, 5" of slush all topped with about 4" of snow.

Bite was slow, only got two walleye. One 12" and one 14"

Talked to several people and they got the same thing. Two or three under sized and some small perch as well.

One guy had a nice one on but it broke his line, probably a pike but we will call it a big walleye just in case.

A bit sloppy to get around but it sure was nice out.

Good Luck All
