Trout Crazy sent PM asking about the ice conditions on Lake Iroquois Sunday. I will have to reply here because ICE SHANTY won't let me reply. I don't know why?
Ice was over 7” inches thick out between the 10’ and 20’ FOW on the Depth Charts of Lakes and Ponds. Ice is solid and safe enough that I would feel comfortable driving a snow machine on it. I'm older and wiser (we'll see about that) and a lot more cautious than I was in my youth. The best time was in morning when it was still below freezing. The slush under the snow cap is really bad for first 25 yards off the access ramp. The pockets of snow drifts on top of the ice don't help matters. I'll be honest. I was sucking wind when I finally stopped to drill and fish, short of where I wanted to start. I felt a little better about an hour later, when a Game Warden walked all the way out to check my license. He wasn't even half my age and he was a little winded too. The worse time was walking off at about 3:30 in the afternoon. It was above freezing with full sun and the slush was much worse than in the morning. Sinking farther down into and coming over the tops of your feet ankle deep in addition to the snow on top of the slush. If you've worn Wellington boots (rubber garden boots) and walked through mud. It was the same kind of feeling and slog. I highly recommend you get out before the sun comes up in the morning and brings the temperature above freezing. You'll still probably have to encounter the slop when you come off the ice.

I have registered and received an email confirmation last month. Is this like joining the Mason's? Do you need to have a sponsor and your application is voted on at the Lodge? Did I get Black Balled!!? Seriously what do I need to do?

Thank you rbobby & perch bate for your replies. That's it? All you have to do is post X amount of times and you can PM members? Wow! I conjured up in my mind all sorts of trials I would have to endure before becoming a full fledged member. Swallowing a live shiner biting the head off a live Perch, running through a gauntlet of Ice Shanty made members with my shirt off while being hit with fishing rods on my back. Picking my finger with a fishing hook and the blood placed on a post card of a King Salmon and burned in my hands in front of fishing rod and reel, while the Great Tuna proclaims "You live by the Rod and Reel and you will die by the Rod and Reel.” Basically the same sort of humiliating trials a pledge does in order to join a fraternity or the mob. I've join one before, The "Greek" not Italian one.

Thanks for the report Yeti! That sounds promising. I'm very reluctant to venture onto unfamiliar ice with all this snow and warm weather.
I think I'll try the late afternoon/evening bite there Wednesday. Hopefully the ice holds up!

If you are going to be venturing way out into the 30-40 FOW I would be darn careful. Before the snow there was two wide open pressure cracks spanning across the width of the lake, open water around the rock island, and the springs were open along the west shore.

I fished it last night. The slush had firmed up enough to walk on. It was difficult to get a confident measurement of the ice, because there was so much crap white ice and packed slush on top. The bottom layer seemed pretty solid.
I didn't venture very far, and I would be nervous to.
