Title: Spearing close to Helena
Post by: hunting-bum on Jan 21, 2019, 06:48 PM
I am trying to figure out where the best place to spear is close to Helena?

I know that it will be a 2 hours or so drive. I am looking at heading to Seeley or Salmon. Just not sure what one would be better.

Thanks for any information

Theres has to be places better than the Seeley chain that are closer to you.

My fishing buddy hit up salmon today. She tried a handful of spots and came across people 30 plus groups and tracks everywhere, and that's a Monday.  She had a nibble, but never managed anything. The seeley chain has gotten pounded this year, so the fish seem to be getting educated quick.
Not trying to duscourage, but giving you a heads up that it's gonna be a tough go of it. The scenery is great and the ice is pretty good, but come ready to share the ice and appreciate the slow times.

There have been huge numbers of ice anglers on Seeley Lake and Salmon Lake this year.  I've never seen so many people.

Pishkun for sure, not a bad trip from Helena if the weather is decent.

Seeley is getting more and more popular with anglers from over here, walk into Sportsman's warehouse and there are reports on the board. Its a nice drive and a change of scenery(better chance of a big fish and it beats 50 mph winds and drifted roads on Pishkun).

I decided to save my gas on day trips and just hold off for overnight trips.

I am going to head to Tiber or Francis this weekend and spear/fish for 3 days.

Thanks for the input. I haven't even considered Pishkun before.

The F&G does everything in their power to wipe out the mature pike in Pishkun, netting, shocking, drawdowns, ect. Was a big pike destination years ago.
