I was up there yesterday.   There’s safe ice (5-7 in) everywhere I drilled in the dam area.

Was going to ice it today but this is what the road looked like this morning north of Hemingford

Hi guys.  My name is Brian.  Thinking about making a trip out to box butte or Merritt.  Looking for crappie first, perch second.  Ice out here is lousy or non existent her than the trout lakes.  Were you having much luck when u fished?  Having not fished either, which would you send a fellow angler to? Thanks guys

I would say Merritt for crappie. Box Butte has some nice perch, blue gill and pike.

Not sure about Alliance, but If you are go through Scottsbluff from SE WY- I'd recommend giving Henry a call.  He's got minnows - large and small if that is what you are looking for. 308-631-5844.  I've not been there this year but have picked up minnows from him for the last several years.

What kind of minnows did you get and how did you do? I'm headed to Box Butte next Monday. Also how early can you pick up from Grand Baits?

We were up there today.  16" of ice at Hunters Point   Seven guys at Hunters point.  Two guys of the boat dock.  We all caught fish but it was SLOW  Small minnows and wax worms.  Northerns, Gills and Perch.  150' off Hunters the water is eight foot deep.  Everybody says it is so low but it is not.  I have seen it at this level quite a few times.  They are running a good head of water out of the dam.  It is not going to fill with that going on.  The road north of Hemingford is patchy snow and ice.  We seen a guy climb the cable guard rail and slam into the bar pit.  I bet that was a fun ride and he was definitely stuck.  Oh talked to a guy that fishes most everyday and he said it was slow the last three days.  Later   Keep them on four wheels

FYI anybody going fishing at Box Butte, there is open water on the face of the dam where the water leaves the structure. And there is snow on the ice near it that covers the ice that could be very thin.  Just be extra cautious.  To our knowledge the rest of the lake should be safe.  Tight lines.

plenty thick on west end guessing 8-10 inches should get thicker with cold

Ice was plenty good near the dam yesterday. Bite was slower, but still iced enough fish to make the trip worthwhile.

Fished out from boat dock today. Some open water around edge but there is a place to walk out. Ice is still 6 to 8 inches as of Sunday afternoon near boat dock. I also saw people fishing out from dam and one group over at hunter's.
