Double Checking My Tipup Setup
« on: Dec 10, 2016, 06:30 PM »
Before I start spooling for the winter I thought I'd double check with you guys if I should up size my leader.  I bought 20 lb fireline crystal and was thinking about attaching it to 8 lb Berkley Vanish.  Should I bump up to 10 lb or stick with the 8 lb.  Thanks

I always run leaders (never steel though).. Even Northern's I just run a heavier Fluorocarbon line usually 12lb. I run Trilene XT in every size depending on what i'm targeting. I do have break offs every now and then but have landed way more than when I use to run "one line fits all"

It depends on what your fishing for.  I use Spider-Wire EZ braid (it comes in a blue box and I get it at Walmart) in 30 pound because it has the same diameter as 8 pound mono.

Thanks guys for the replies.  I'll be primarily fishing for walleye, but there's a good chance I'll run into some pike along the way.

i'd bump it up to 12 or even 15 if pike are involved. i mostly use tipups for trout and never go lower than 10 lb test for my leaders. even in super clear water i've never noticed any issues.
