Best Lakes in Colorado
« on: Dec 20, 2007, 09:04 AM »
Hello all,

I am moving to Colorado in the near future and was wondering where the best place to move is so that I can fish frequently?  That includes bass fishing and ice fishing.  I am from Northeast NY and would like some help before I pick a place to live in CO and buy a home.

Thanks and I look forward to fishing Colorado!!!

Anywhere! Colorado has some of the best fishing in the country, especially in/near the mountains. Colorado is known for its great trout fishing, which is 90% of what you target in the mountains, but has great panfish, bass, and pike fishing as well. It all depends on what you want to target. Southwestern CO is incredible foir trophy trout, but Northern CO has lots of diversity - Bass and panfish on the plains, trout in the foothills and mountains. I would recommend Fort Collins, great access to lots of lakes, the Poudre, Big Thompson, Rocky Mountain National Park, and not much in the way of crowds. I usually fish alone all day without seeing anyone, even on weekends in the summer. Fort Collins is also a great city, lots to do. I am originally from Philly and I love it (although I recently moved up to Red Feather Lakes...for the fishing)

Mountainscout,

Thanks so much for the info.  I am a tourney angler here in NY and target Bass all the time.  But when the water gets hard, I target everything and love to panfish.  We have some good Lake Trout and Salmon fishing through the ice.

I really appreciate your time and I look forward to the move there.  Just want to be close to water and the good fishing in Colorado!!!

Thanks again.

Johnny,

If you're looking for fishing within 15 minutes of your house then be sure to skip Colorado Springs.  There's a lot more lakes and streams with public access to the north of Denver than to the south.

Good luck

Take a good look at western Co. it is a couple hours closer to Lake Powell Utah which has a great bass fishery Stripes, LMB, SMB, and Walleye. 150 mi.or longer and 350' deep lots of tournaments.
Also Blue Mesa, I think 46# is the latest record laker out of there.
We have great trout rivers plus pike and smb in the Yampa and cats in the lower Colorado river.
Ice fishing is second to none at Rifle and Harvey Gap for pike and perch as far as Colorado fishing goes plus Stagecoach and Elk Head.
Wayneswords.com for Powell info and Westernslopeanglers.co m for colorado info.

X-RAP is right (for once).  If I had no family or job constraints I would pick Western Colorado hands down.  More world class fishing for all species within 4 hours of Grand Jct than you can fish in a lifetime.

Don you know I'm always right. Coach you may want to look at what kind of lifestyle you enjoy either the Peoples Republic of Denver or Free Colorado west of the divide. Don gets a pass to come over here once in a while if he has an escort.

Now that humors the @#%& out of me.   But seriously, rifle gap is killer when theres enough ice.

Well guys - I have finally had a chance to look at the response and thanks for all the info.  Not quite sure of the future yet.  Moving out with the girlfriend and looking to be coaching college wrestling.

As for the Adirondacks, I am close to Lake George the King!!  It is great fishing.  Can't wait til it freezes.  We are actually going thru a warm front right now and I fished yesterday in 65 degree weather.  And tomorrow I am going to try and find safe ice for the 50 degree weather.

I will keep you in formed.  The drive for your son from Ft. Drum is long, but if he choses I could send him in the right direction and could offer him a place to stay.

Talk with you both soon.

I wrestled at Boston College before losing the program and then started coaching a high schol team while still in college.

I was looking at Colorado State or anywhere else.  Any level would be fine.  I currently coach at RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) in the NCWA.

If you know of any schools looking or need asst. let be glad to know.

[/quote] Do you already have a job? At what school?
We have 2 pretty good D2 schools on the western slope Mesa St. in Grand Junction and Western in Gunnison. Gunnison is near Blue Mesa Lake.
My youngest son is no2 at 135# in 2a class and placed 4th last yr as a freshman 130# his school is #3 and has bested the #1 ranked team the last 2 tournys. and league tourn. is sat.
Check out COwrestling.com they have a forum as well as current hs and college scores and news.
Maybe in a couple yrs you can pick up a few good ones out of this school he has 2 buddys in his class that are in top 5 plus they all have good grades.

X-rap - ALways looking for good recruits.  I am currently coaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.  The school is one of the best for Architecture and Engineering.  They are looking for qualified student/athletes.  They can always check out our webpage at http://wrestling.union.rpi.edu or www.ncwa.net and then look for RPI.

I am actually looking to make the move to CO and saw before that Western CO was looking for a coach.  I will check out the COwrestling page and see what might be available.  If not, I might look to start my own club.  I have a few friends that wrestled with me on the world level that still live in CO.

Stay in touch.

my parents live in Co
not enough ice close by for me
have to be in the mountains for the ice/water
you hear about all the great outdoor action there but really they are water deprived
good river fishin and tons of reservoirs
maybe the wrestling is better i dont know
