Ice (?) in the NW
« on: Jan 16, 2020, 10:16 AM »
Any info on lakes that survived the "super thaw" from last weekend would be much appreciated.

Mount Tom is all open water. Didn’t go any further north.

Got it Fishon. Thanks.

When I was up in Litchfield last Saturday I never saw drain holes suck up water so fast.

I just read about the physics....not complicated...the surface water is more dense than the ice...rushes to get under the ice.

I drilled a 6 in. hole and within the hour it was an 8 in. hole. The velocity of the draining water was enough to stir up silt from the bottom and regurgitate it back through the hole.

That brought an end to my flags.

C'mon cold!

I haven't looked. Any ice that did survive will be sketchy, if you can get on. But I'm sure some people will be on ice this weekend.

Feels weird replying to my own post.

Anyhow....just spoke to a guy from a bait shop up in Winsted.

He said "there's nothing (ice) up here after last weekend, and not selling any bait."   :(

Lake Winchester this morning.  And every place else was bad edges and/or open center

Not worth the risk, even if there’s anything still lingering around it most likely shot. Give it some time, this time next week may be a different story. Till then... 🤞🏼

It took 2 days for Mt Tom to go from capped to open water!

Was at Winchester last weekend. Didn't need to see that pic (but thanks anyway) to not even think about going there this weekend. Even if the edges were good, there are car sized drain holes out there. I posted in another thread that once we get a little snow cover Saturday, that place would be a death trap anyways. Going to try Hinsdale Setback tomorrow am.

:(  That sucks but thanks for the info. Guess we'll be doing the single file spud crawl in the am, lol. Got a report of 7" on Barton and a local business across the street said he's seen guys out there every day this week.  Guess we'll see what's what in the morning.  ???

So bait shops can't or won't sell bait based on what they consider "safe ice?" I didn't know shiners are a liable retail purchase. I guess bait shops deny customers while liquor sell beer to anyone?
A smart person would watch the few that ventured to the ice sheet, the daring would follow in their boot prints, but the pioneers would already be heading to where they belong.

Androux.....what Jeffsor is saying is exactly what the guy meant.

They were not selling bait only because nobody was going out fishing.

The shop was not making any statement on what is safe/not safe.

They definitely were NOT refusing to sell bait.

He called the wrong shop.  I got good bait in winsted friday night. Outdoor artistry took care of me.  Avoid Northwest sporting goods, that bait sucks.  The other shop on main street closed.  The guy running it was arrested for calling his kids daycare and saying he was going to kill people there.  Was all over the news.

Really? I've always had pretty good luck there. Usually pretty hearty. I bought like 5dz there over a month ago and haven't had one die off in my tank
The BIG one is just one flag away!

Species caught : largemouth, smallmouth,  bluegill, perch, White perch, crappie, trout, catfish, bowfin, pickerel, pike

Most of Tyler Lake in Goshen is frozen.  Guys were out all day on Sunday near the launch.  Can't be too thick though...

Any new ice forming on Mount Tom?
Was hoping to take an hour ride up there on Saturday morning but not if some friendly shared info can save me a wasted trip.

Thanks!

You love that place, don't lie.  I know people who are successful there but you cant see them...because its at night.  (And yes you can access the ice without going into the state park)

I love going there and not having to leave the grill to chase flags all day. Lol. It is just really hard to catch at Tom because of the plethora of alewives. Good day is Mount one fish. Average day it’s mount one flag🚩.
