Gravel makes sense, I was thinking concrete would be a lot material to haul.  I put in a temporary Canadian Tire 12' X 24' garage before I built the cabin, did it in winter and cut 2 spruce logs to secure it to.

I currently have  a 10x10 a 12'x24' and 2 10x20's at my place in town. All anchored like this and they are very solid anchored this way.
Should have no problem getting gravel delivered on the ice which is nice.

Are any particular make/model of the garage tents more/less reliable in your books Drifter?  The tarps seem to be good for about 10 years in Whitehorse, with some rattier ones still around holding on older than that.

My original 10x20's are the tan coloured tarps which are  fairly light duty and they last 5 or 6 years. My 10x10 & 12'x24' are heavier duty brown round top ones that are 2 or 3 years old now and are holding up great.

My guess is the 24'x30' cover will be much heavier as it is snow & wind load rated.
Snow load rating is 50 psf which is what the snow load rating is here in Yellowknife.
It should be much heavier duty as it costs almost $7K.

All my shelters are Shelter logic.

Last night at the cabin before I head home and back to work.
Got the caulking and touch up paint done on the West wall finally.
Then I pulled the scaffolding down and started to set up to finish the gable end of the porch roof.

Got the laundry room electrical and plumbing roughed in and the insulation done.

Also got the washroom electrical and insulation in.

Had a little time to do a few things around the cabin while I waited for the rain to mellow out this morning.
Put in a little more insulation and got my scaffolding setup so I can get to installing the chimney for the pellet stove up and running. :)

Dave....excellent progress on the build! The stone you’re going to lay at the base of those walls will really make the exterior pop! Thanks for sharing the pictures and letting us tag along!

Update on my broken miter saw. Brought it home on the weekend and dug up the receipt for it. I was off on it's age.
It was quite a bit older than I originally thought. The warranty will run out this Friday!!!!  :woot: :woot: :woot:
Took it in on Monday and they didn't want to send it for repair and decided to just give me a brand new one!!!!   ;D
Pretty darn good deal. Use the saw for just under 3 years, have it break and get a brand new one to replace it.

You win some, you lose some, Drifter.  Won that one!

I'm curious as to why you went with a pellet stove up there.  I would think you have more dead trees than you could imagine in your neck of the woods?

A lot less work with pellets for one.
But more important to me is not waking up freezing because the fire is out.
The stove I have will run for more than 30 hours on low.
Another plus is pellets take up a lot less room than cords of wood.

Got the stove vent and some insulation done this weekend.

Just need to anchor the stove to the floor and finish my fresh air intake next weekend.

Got a pic of the twins while I was on the roof. :)

Dave I have enjoyed watching your build. Like you I worked alone most of the time but never doing a project as big as what you have undertaken.

The place should be air tight with the plastic over the insulation they way you have done it. To get better venting over the insulation on a 2x12  roof on a house I helped my cousin build he ripped 2x6's in half length ways then screwed them on the bottom side of the 2x12's. With 12 inches insulation that left a good space to vent the roof.

If you have not thought about it, I would suggest that you put a diverter above the chimney to prevent a snow slide from taking it down. I had to go fix a  bunch of smashed  vents that some others from the company I was working for did not put diverters over. Being a pole barn company they had quite a bit of galvanized angle iron that came with the steel when it was shipped. We made a V out of it long enough that we could lag screw it to the purloins.

That's what the pink Styrofoam things do.

Yep, thought about it. Though it's only a 1/3 of the way down the roof from the top and it's on the side of the roof that gets hardly any snow buildup on it so not sure if I will install one or not yet.

Dave I realize that about the Styrofoam. My cousins roof was shed style so he thought that doing it thet way he did it might work better.  He found some aluminum vents that went at the top of the shed roof to allow that heat out. The roof was shingled and faced south so he figured doing that it would let the heat out better so the shingles did not suffer from the heat.

Drifter Dave nice work keep the photos coming. How long do you figure that stove will take to get up to a comfortable temperature in the winter.

Gonna be able to test out the pellet stove this weekend.
They're calling for highs to 50* with lows in the 30's.
Saturday night it's supposed to drop down to 34*.

Dave, when you selected the stove, did you do any calculation of cabin volume vs. heat output, etc?

Looking forward to the report.

I'm interested in knowing the BTU rating of your stove.  It must be extremely efficient with how the outlet is zigzagged, definitely minimal heat loss up the chimney with that design.
